Freedom of Speech - But only if you agree with me

http://news.nky.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/AB/20060414/NEWS0103/604140420

In another example of hate and intolerance, a group of students, led by a "Professor" Sally Jacobsen, decided that a registered group of students who support Right to Life, cannot have a display consisting of 400 crosses.  Why?

She said she was infuriated by the display, which she saw as intimidating and a "slap in the face"

So she and some of her toadies went out in the cover of darkness to practice their version of 'Free Speech' and destroyed it.  Not in the light of day mind you, but skulking around like cockroaches in the middle of the night.

And in the same tired trick of many of her ilk, this misanthrope compared the display to of course a Nazi Display:

Pulling up the crosses was similar to citizens taking down Nazi displays on Fountain Square, she said.

"Any violence perpetrated against that silly display was minor compared to how I felt when I saw it. Some of my students felt the same way, just outraged," Jacobsen said.

To their credit, the University, Northern Kentucky University is investigating to see if charges should be brought.  In addition, the group that the right to life group was protesting, Educators for Reproductive Freedom and its leader Nancy Hancock, did not support or condone this act of violence and anti-free speech by the moronic professor or her ignorant toadies.

For a change the violators of Free Speech are not going to get away with stifling dissent from their views.  Too many times in the past, we have seen University administrators side with the groups they are sympathetically in line with.  But for now, even the opponents of the Right to Life Group, at least the ones with IQs above double digits, are in agreement that free speech should apply to everyone, not to only those that agree with you.

With palms together,
Hello DrGuy, I couldn't agree more. Free speech should and must be protected. This behavior is atrocious. Be well.

The good news here is that the teacher appears to stand alone.  The University just placed her on Administrative leave, and she will retire at the end of the semester.  SO in this case, saner heads prevailed all around.

Interesting. So many important things to do in life and here we have one group wasting money on crosses and another destroying them. Are you sure this is a University and not Middle School?

Hey I don't take anyones right to protest, I just think some are just a waste of time and money.

Another great article, Doc. I don't know where you find all this stuff, but I agree again wholeheartedly.

As I've stated previously, anyone who wants to infringe on the freedom of speech of others needs to realize that dissidence is why this country is still around and has a viable government system 200+ years after the fact! Why do other supposedly democratic societies fail? Because they don't have dissidence. It is the voice of opposition that keeps any one group from overstepping its bounds. In a system where one side is heavily predominant, the system will always fail.

When it comes right down to it, most freedom of speech issues can be classified that way by one side or the other, n'est pas?

I think the checks and balances worked this time.  When one person (I wont say side) decided that Free speech included violence, not only the opposition condemned her actions, but others (that she would consider, but I am sure they do not) on her side did as well.

When I first started reading this article, I was outraged.  but then when I read the whole thing, I was heartened.  Educators for reproductive Freedom and the Right to life Group dont agree on much.  But this time, they were brought together on a common issue by what is really a kook.

lol... it's funny how people promoting a illion or so abortions a year are always so quick to toss the 'nazi' tag at their opponents. They doth protest too much, methinks... or he who smelt it, dealt it, etc...

This is the same double standard quasi-Liberals offer all the time. We can throw paint on your fur coat, scream obscenities at political opponents, chain ourselves to trees so you can't cut them down, but God forbid anyone do the same things in return. That's "intimidation" or "hate speech" or preventing people from excercising their rights.

Chain yourself to someone else's tree, you're a saint. Stand outside an abortion clinic with a sign and you're evil. Put up a jillion little "protest" tombstones hijacking the names of dead soldiers, you're a patriot. Put up a bunch of crosses to protest abortion and you are slapping people in the face.

The great thing is, no one is blind enough not to see it. They know they are hypocrites, they just think the average person won't notice. Wrong, we do.

And she calls herself a teacher?? Man they really hire nuts in universities, lol! But seriuosly what surprizes me is that she was contradicting herself all way through and she didnt realize it, it's like not seeing the nose on someones face...

Liberals are only LIBERAL when you totally agree with them, sounds like teachers are starting this mantra too.

And even better, some of them are starting to back away from the hypocites.  At least in your home state.  I am heartened by nancy Hancock and the Dean of NKU.  I doubt they agree with the Right to lifers, but they at least did not swim in the swill of sally Jackson.

You picked up on a good theme.  And notice that she is retiring (and has had tenure since 1980).  Both indicate she is not a spring chicken.  Perhaps she is senile?  If so, that really speaks volumes to her grad students who did her dirty work.  If not, then Jim Jones has nothing on her.

I will give them the benefit of the doubt as this woman is just plain stupid or senile.  Not even Hillary Clinton would do something so stupid.

yet.
