Animated Hull

Video: http://stickman9000.visiblesurface.com/gc2%20cargo.avi
Note: the compression made some of the frames jump around a bit, but when viewing the model ingame, there is no jump between the frames in the animation. I should have this hull released tomorrow. It's nothing special, but it was made just to prove that fully animated hulls are possible.

EDIT: You can now download the hull in the library (when the evaluation is finished), or for now, you can get it here:

thats a known fact. my first try on modding was with a high poly Omega Class Destroyer with rotating hull section. worked very well.

the only thing that didnt work for me was animated textures (tried to morph through multiple textures). I wonder if animated GIFs would work for this.

Hey Coplann,

Heh, ok, wasnt sure if it was well known yet. Oh well

Anyway, I submitted the hull to the library and should be up whenever the evaluation is finished.
You can also download it here:

If you can make a modding article on how to do this that would be awsome!

That's just awesome. So now we can have rotating sensor dishes too?

Is it possable to have a part that is added to the jewalery parts that rotates? That would be extreemly easy to work with.

Hey Thrawn,

I made a rotating jewlery piece that was animated a while about a week ago, but never tested it and kinda forgot about it. I think now it's time to try that out

Ok, I just threw my animated jewlery piece in game, and no, it does not work. The animation plays when I have the object selected, but when I go to place it, the animation stops.

ok.. Stupid me.. HOW DO I GET THIS SHIP IN THE GAME!!!!

Oh wow... that's really nice. I'm glad to hear that the hull works. (I tried a simple rotating jewelry a few days ago, but was dissapointed when it wouldn't work). Thanks for the heads up. Of course having just the hull animated really limit the creative options. We really need to appeal to stardock to let the structures be animated as well.

ok.. got it in the game
WOOT i will be so eager to make a new ship

Ok, I'm starting a larger animated hull. Now, since as of now, you cannot make rotating jewlery pieces, I was thinking of adding at least a couple of extra rotating points on the model. For example:

Point I rotates 360 degrees.
Point II rotates in a 160 degree arc facing forwards.
...and most of the cylindrical section of the hull rotates around 360 degrees as well.

Do you guys think it's worth it adding the 2 little rotating spots on the hull? Or should those be scrapped and just have the main center section rotating?

i wish you coudl rotate jewelry...

jmy recomendation.. work on textures .. honestly its a major thing

the textures need alot of adjusting to make it look like a in game ship. (but thats easyer to do i think)

i would recomend taking the existing cargo for terrans and one of the large/huge designs and adding rotation into them..

i would recomend doing a medium as well.. (consider babylon 5 where earth did not have a gravity system cept spinning) for a long time (but then they were behind on tech )

now in reguards to the jewelry spots.. yes.. i like them.. they make good spots for "awacs" spots

In reguards to the rotation people does it slow down the game at all... hmmm

I would love to see the AI use these as well

Hey mementh,

Heh, well, the textures suck on my 'cargo hauler' because I just threw that togeather as a test. I did that entire model, textures and all mayine in, I dunno, 6 hours? I was tinkering a lot with the model itself and the animations, so that added some time. The whole model was just a test really But I think I may go back and beef up the texture somewhat when I'm texturing this large hull

please do man.. it would make it look alot better

i like it.. and i would love to see more

Why did this post suddenly distort all to the right? The images aren't oversized...

its beel like that (the messup of the forum?)

Problem man.. your "center" is bad.. i made a HUGE SHIP

and as you can see.. its over a parsec long.. whereas other "long" ships fit within the parsec...

any fixes you could do?

Well, since you made such a huge ship, it is just that: HUGE. As far as I know there is nothing I can do about that just because you made such a large ship.

On a different note, I'm currently making a new texture from scratch for this hull. It'll be in the works for the next little while due to the fact that I have finals here at school and I will be going on vacation afterwards. So for the time being, I'm putting the larger hull on hold temporairly and I'll be focusing on getting a better texture for the cargo hauler. It won't be spectacular due to the fact that I was never good at texturing, but it will definatly be an improvement.

I dunno I've made large hulls that stretch the limits of the creation screen and they never did that.

exactly it shoulda shrunk.. it might be the animation thats messing it up?
