How do you upgrade ships?

I would like to upgrade my colony ships to troop transports. The manual says that I can do this either individually or by ship class.
I can't figure out how / where to do this. I look all over the screens, but can't see an 'UPGRADE' button.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You do not get troop ships until you research Planetary Invasion. You will get a pre-made basic Transport ship. But it is always better to make your own. You do this in Shipbulder.

Click on the ship you want to upgrade.

Click the upgrade button.

realize though that each upgrade is expensive and if money is short it would probably be easier and cheaper to just destroy them and get back a small credit.
But the other two post here are straight on. You have to research planetary invasion first to unlock the troop transport. Once you do this you have to click on the ship you wish to upgrade and there is a small i (information) button. click it and you will see all the options available to you for this particular ship. Upgrade is one of these choices. Upgrade is expensive but also quicker than building one from scratch.
