Faction Star bases

Ok so here is the deal you start a game and you are colonizing only to notice you have a buddy next to you. You scramble to get the best planets of course but as always the AI colonize anything not nailed down by your perverbial hammer. How do you fix this? Two ways

1: to qoute General Edmund Duke "well I Believe that qualifies as hostile"

or

2: You have lovely things that I like to call Faction Bases. Faction bases as you all know can increase your influence in a area that they are in. Influence can be a real problem if half your planets are in the hands of a potential enemy. The negative effect on your peoples contentment with your rule is the least of your worries as riots are a real possiblility for wayward colonies. Hence the Faction bases. Throw down a group of four around the system in question and watch in wonder as that system is now a island of your faction. Continue to upgrade the bases and before long those planets not under your sway will be feeling the hurt "spiritually" if not physically.

Hope this helps some new players

*blinks* ... is this the long version of "build Influence Starbases to increase your influence" or what?

the OP almost makes a good strategy point, though... i never colonize the junky second planet i my home system.

i just let one of my neighbors do it, and then wait for it to revolt and join my empire.

that doesn't take any Influence (what the OP is calling "Faction") starbases, though.

same goes for class <10 planets that have another >10 planet in the same system... get the good planet, and then only grab the junk if nothing better turns up.

if another player grabs it, either it will revolt, or you can take it at your leisure later, using ships built on the bigger and better worlds you were colonizing while the AI was stealing crumbs.

at higher difficulty, the AI will often try to counter the Influence base strategy, and building four of them is a pretty expensive proposition...

I had a problem in my last game, I could have gone with the 10 systems with 4 planets each, or pick the >17 planet in each of 30 systems. Nearly got overthrown, and then researched up to cultural conquest. Actually gained more planets, and of course the more planets I gain the more influence I have

And Rashingi, as people have said, these are in the game as influence bases, spreading your way of life around the galaxy. Have you not notice the AI use them?
