Ship building Guide?

Hi,

Can anyone point me to a guide on how to use the ship builder interface? I played my first game last night and I was able to add weapons etc. but adding the other parts to the ship to give it its look was not very intuitive.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Well, I don't think there is a guide. But, it isn't supposed to be intuitive or give you anything to go by, it's just what you like. I used to just chuck wings on the sides, and have done. Symmetry can be a help, and remember not to expect Link on your first try. Hell, I'm not expecting that on my first year.

There are also so downloadable ship designs here Link if you want, but I would just start small (wings, symmetry, centralised parts) and work your way up.

It really the design i am looking for help with. More the actual use of the interface. I was having problems once i had put the wing on one side for example finding the mirror wing for the other side.

That's not a problem with the interface, that's a problem with certain parts.

I see the same thing with specific hulls and parts. Some parts always wind up clipping into the model or facing the wrong direction and no amount of rotation makes it symmetrical. I just started switching to a different hull if I come across that (or if I am an hour into the beast then I just don't use that wing)

If you are burying the hull under parts, it doesn't really matter which base hull you use. I just start with a shape , make enough nodes, then go crazy stacking stuff.

There is no port/starboard types of stuff, it will rotate to match. If you have a mouse with a scroll wheel, you can hold down the scroll button and use that to pan around the ship model.

Also, the latest beta 1.1 (soon to be released) includes some rotation control dials you can click on and rotate parts with.

The original game had nodes you can put on hardpoints to change the rotation, but that didn't always help.

The beta's ship editor is even better than the original.

Does that mean that if i want to update a ships design, i can select the ship in the editor, and start moving/adding/removing stuff with out having to start completely over?

I installed some of the ship hulls from the library...is there a way to pull them hulls into the editor to modify?
if there is in the current version of the editor i havent found it.

I tried messing with the interface again last night. I must just be stupid. i cont get any of the aditional parts to work. (basically attach where i want them)

If you can get the weapons to attach, you should be able to get the additional parts to attach. Remember, what controls where you attach things is your MOUSE pointer. Put the mouse pointer over the hardpoint and click, it should attach.

I think it's tempting on some of the larger additional parts to try and line the part up with the hard point, but that doesn't work. Zoom in, put the mouse on the hard point, and click. It ought to work.
