Computer Won't Shut Down

I don't know what is happening. First..Photoshop started getting a little buggy. Then when I went to shut down the computer, it wouldn't. It wouldn't restart or shutdown, so I manually shut it down. When I rebooted i got this message instead of my logon screen...
parse error ';' at line 173

I had to click on it a few times to get to logon and when I did, it was WindowsXP's regular logon.

I tried to do a system restore, but again, it will not shut down or restart.

Hmm, not sure about photoshop (probably you abusing it with amazing art lol), but I searched the "parse error ';' at line 173" you said you got. I found this site:

It lists a bunch of errors. 173 says this: 173 A lock request was not outstanding for the supplied cancel region.

I really have no idea what that means, or if thats even the problem @_@.
The only things I can suggest are to scan for spyware, adware, virii, and to check the task manager. If you see something running that you don't know what it is, use this site: Link

Or search it in google .

Also, it may be a start up problem. Check that out for programs that you don't recognize.

Did you change your Logon screen? Uninstall any of these.

Put the XP CD in and open the Command Prompt window and type sfc /scannow make sure there's a space between sfc and the /.

If that doesn't work then do an XP repair.

None of the links are helping. Thanks for trying, though. I have uninstalled the logon studio and am running adaware. It's found 2 critical objects but isn't done yet.

What it seems to be is
Win32.Backdoor.CiaDoor
and Ad Aware cannot remove it.

I don't know for sure that this is the cause of my problems. I can't find info on it beyond what Adaware has, which is very brief.

If you try one of the forums listed on the Alliance of Security Analysis Professionals site, you might be able to get some info if it's a malware problem...

Ah, a backdoor. I had this problem with my mouse cursor >_<. At first I thought it was CursorXP, but after uninstalling that, the problem continued. Cursor was non stop clicking and moving to the top right of my screen @_@. However, my AVG removed it . Perhaps you could manually delete the file? Or boot in safe mode, and delete it from there >_>.

I'm running Ad Aware for the fourth time. The Win32.Backdoor seems to be gone, but still have the restart problem and the Parse error ';' at line 173 thing going on. The only info I could find on the PC not logging off, restarting, or shutting down had to do with recent installs of Norton, which I don't have. I've posted HJT logs at a couple places and am hoping soemthing turns up.

Not an option, since XP is embedded in this thing. If it comes to something like that, I will have to do a full system restore. Which means backing everything up etc., etc.

Best do a reformat as you have stated and start again and this time after you have finished the reformat go straight to microsoft download all patches then head over to cnet and see what free antivirus ware is there , i think it's avast and avg ,if you have an external modem with a nat firewall also install a free software firewall from cnet and set all to autoupdate,

win32.backdoor according to google is for remote access, check to make sure you have remote access invites turned off (apart from remote access it is used for a techie to help with a prob and he can see what the story is while he's walking you thru it) , i can't remember where you have to untick that function


EDIT: ATTENTION do not run two antivirus , you must uninstall the norton first then install the new free antivirus , it's ok to connect to the net so long as you have a firewall installed either nat or software typ preferably both, but go directly to the free software after you have been to microsoft

I already have AVAST. It's my only anti-virus. Ad Aware is what found it and has semmes to remove it. It's just that I still cannot shutdown, restart, or logoff and I get that stupid Parse erroro message when I boot.

One of the HJT site forums had me download ewido and run it. It too says everything is clean.

The only other thing I have noticed not quite right, is that AVAST seems to take forever when it gets to my C:/WINDOWS/I386 folder. Normally an entire scan takes about 2 hours, give or take, but now it takes up to 4 or 6 hours just on this one folder.

Po'....I had a logonscreen do this to me once and I couldn't shut down, etc. It wasn't just a matter of changing it but actually uninstalling it entirely before my machine would respond. Don't know if this'll help but it's worth looking into....the easiest way to find which one is to move them all to another drive and return them individually until you find the culprit.

Also, I noticed Avast scans deleted files as well as, so if you run Sure Delete v5.1.1 to remove them, it will cut your scan times considerably....see http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,22393,tfg,tfg,00.asp

I did a complete recovery. The problem just kept expanding into other areas. Just Got back online.

That was one of the first things I tried, but it did no good.

Currently, I am looking a a Compaq Screen with all the crap that comes with it. Too numerous to mention. Thought of doing a SS of this mess and submitting it. lol.

Sounds like you need to appeal to yraG (Gary) for some technical advice. Anything that says backdoor sounds like a Trojan to me and no amount of "recovery" will get rid of it if it's got into your restore points.

I noticed Avast scans deleted files


I'm pretty sure if you empty your recycle bin it won't scan them. Files in your recycle bin aren't really deleted, just relocated.

'Hours' for a scan? I don't think so, even on a bad day. Unless you have hundreds of thousands of files, that's way out of bounds. That said, you're not going to fix anything until you turn System Restore off (you will lose all your restore points...not that it really matters at this point). After you turn it off, re-boot into safe mode and run Ewido (or any other security proggie you have) from there.

" virii "...!..lol!..This has been happening to me lately, the last few weeks, glad to see some comments. This main PC is all "whitebox" homebuilt by me so I haven't a clue why. Doesn't happen all the time, just one in five or ten shutdown/restarts, usually after a particularly heavy session of Photoshop-Word/internet cut'n'paste/scanning, etc, to make a term paper for my daughter, etc. I've been hitting Start>Shut down>Shut Down/Restart as usual, and it will go back to desktop, remove a few icons from systray, Sysmetrix, Rainy, OD+, but not CXP, icons, or WB 5, then hang. I wait, an hour sometimes... I then open Task Manager and it's not showing any programs in the first page (I don't usually then go to Running Tasks, too daunting) try to Shut Down from the TM taskbar. It doesn't work so I reach up and mash the Power On button on the case, wait for the smell of burning insulation/chips, flipflops, doghairs, dust bunnies/kitties or whatever, and it goes to sleep pretty as you please...go outside in the snow, smoke a Camel, wait a minute and Power On, F8, and run all the tools from Start>My Computer>C:\Properties(shows the piechart of my C:\ )...Restart and mutter the short form of the Serenity Prayer: "f___ i_!".

Can't wait for the PC to get built on an electron, quantum-mech style ("it works if you don't look at it...??!!!), get it implanted,contact-lens HUD, chip-and-store myself for future generations (immortality!...)... bottom line: "in a hundred years, nobody'll know the difference anyways".[looks out window,EMT van outside, guys with white strappy jacket coming at a run....]

hey Po : as a 'whatever it takes' measure, try doing a scan with your purchased version of Spyware Doctor instead of your recent choice of Adaware & see what that turns up;Lantec & GraffiX-MajjiK are onto something in their comment re 'trojans';it has been my experience as we have discussed that this is one of the finest Spyware/Trojan detector/removers....let me know your progress

SureDelete deletes the ghost stuff left over when you uninstall a program or delete a file. The stuff that allows you to retrieve accidently deleted items. It's all still in there somewhere. I tried it out after reading Starkers other thread about it and it does work. It cut my scan time with Avast almost in half. Just be sure to run SD Disk and not the other parts of the program or you will permanently delete things you don't want to.

Kevin, I found out that AV proggies do scan deleted files because I watched Avast scanning a whole bunch of walls I had deleted after resizing them from 600 x 800 to 1024 x 768.....and on that same drive, system files from an uninstalled OS were also being scanned. After running Sure Delete those files were no longer present and did not appear in the scan....prior to this Avast was scanning 2 million + files, now its scanning under 1 million after cleaning the 8 partitions on each of my 3 Hard Drives.
