Exporting to .x format

I grabbed some 3d models off the web and am trying to export to .x format for use in the game. I'm using 3DS Max 8 and I downloaded the latest Panda exporter.

When I choose Panda Xporter tools I do export all objects choose my directory and click the export button then 3DS Max pauses a bit and a pop up displays "Don't know how to save that file type"

I have a feeling I'm missing something simple, what am I doing wrong and how do i fix this?

Thanks for any help!

don't use the panda exporter menu plugin, instead just go to File->Export and save as *.x
It's annoying but that will fix it.

I have also found the following options to product the smallest and most compatible output:

Animation Panel: Delete the active animation segment

Texture and Effects: Convert texture maps, Format: PNG, scale to a power of 2 (Not sure if this is necessary for GalCiv2, but it is for some importers).

X-Settings: Binary with Compressed, top frame only (I found this to be important for compatibility), Left handed axis (Depends on your max file, but most likely you will need this turned on, or else your model will be rotated 90deg).

Happy exporting.

There are two parts to the panda exporter, the script and the plug in. The panda site could be a little more clear, as you encounter the download link to the script first, and may think that thats the component you need. But it will give you that "dont know how to save that file type" message if you are trying to use the script with out the plug in.

This is the component you need to install:

Link

into the plug-ins folder with the other files of the same extension.

After that, the script should "know how " to save that file type, but as the above poster mentioned, you dont want to use the script. As he said, from that point, simply select "export as", and if you have the plug in installed correctly, there should be an (.x) file extension availaible for export.

Excellent! Thanks guys!

I now am able to export and use in the game but I'm having problems with hard points.

It shows the ship to be covered with them and they are huge, making whatever i attach giant regardless of how i scale it in the ship builder.
