I call the cops
The bystandard affect (effect?)

Hold up...first I need to change the radio station....somehow, J-Lo's (EDIT oops, I mean Jessica Simpson) cover of take my breath away just doesn't make a good backdrop for this post. But really though, will that song ever be good for anything. Maybe she created it so other music artists can say..."well, I know this song sucks, but at least we didn't cover Take my breath away." Alright....I suppose this indie rock will have to do.
Okay, so day one of my pre 6 o'clock bike commute began today and I was more than excited that I actually got out of bed in time to take a leisurely 10+ mile ride to work without having to touch a steering wheel. Our story begins in the first 2 minutes of the ride. I have to make my way to a wooded path to get onto the main trail near my apartment. It was still dark and as I jumped the curb I heard a rustling in the bushes. Not thinking too much of it I turned towards the woods expecting to see a scurring rabbit or squirrel. Instead....I see two men anchored against the bridge dressed in black from head to toe.
Not sure if they knew if I could see them or not, so I gave a "what's going on guys?" Not sure exactly why I said anything, maybe I just wanted them to know that I could see them and if they tried to jump me it wouldn't be because they snuck up on me. "uhh...nothin'" was the reply as I made my way over the railroad tracks to the main path.
I biked a little ways and then said to myself..."I should call the cops." So I bust out the cell phone while I'm still peddaling and have a brief chat with dispatch as I try to explain where the possible thugs were. A few minutes later I get a call from a squad asking for clarification of where they were and I tried best as I could to tell them, though I suck at directions. About 30 hour later (takes about 45 minutes to bike to my destination) I get a call from the officer telling me he found the guys and "looked them over upside down but couldn't find anything on them to take them in, but they had a really shitty story about why they were there in the woods. I got their names and we'll keep tabs on these guys...because really, they were probably up to no good. Thanks for calling and let us know if you see anything again....bye."
I was happy about this for a number of reasons....A) I didn't just think "oh, someone else will call or something."
They actually found them C) It may prevent them from doing something shady in the future if that's exactly what they're up too D) The cops were appreciative of my call......I've called in the past about other things and had officers come across as annoyed and burdened....and I rarely call unless I worry about someone else's safety.
I often give people the benefit of the doubt...but seriously, why were two guys dressed in all black hiding in the woods at 5 in the morning?....I doubt they were playing a friendly game of hide and seek.
So hopefully there isn't a part 2 to this article, but if there is it might be because I burried my kryptonite lock in the back of some clown's head looking for victims in my neighborhood.
The other day my bro and I were walking through the city and saw a car with a dude in it that appeared to be asleep and there was smoke coming from his car but it was such a busy area that we figured someone else would call if something was really shady. We went to a restaurant near there and about 15 min. later a bunch of fire trucks were surrounding the vehicle.....I think the guy was probably fine...but seriously that made me almost queasy. So hopefully I'm over the bystandard affect.
Peace y'all,
and I'm pullin' for all of us just mindin' our business.
