Economy help

i still cannot grasp it

I have looked through all the threads, but i still am having trouble with my economy. Every game i battle keeping my treasury in the green. The only way i can do that is by not building ships or anything. How can I keep my economy up?

there several things you can do:

max out population (if you could keep them happy).
don't expand TOO quickly (it is costly to build up,each new planet. so... don't bite more than you can chew).
don't build unnecessary buildings (not every planets need to have a starport, a farm, a bank, etc.)
lower your social spending to avoid waste. (I play at 0% social spending mostly in my games)
research tech "Trade" and start trading as soon as possible.
sell useless ships, techs, planets, etc. to other races for max price.
lower overall spending, and rise tax (if pop growth is not a issue, then 47% approval rating is ok with me)
rise tax
rise tax
and finally, rise tax.

try some or all of them.
