Ship building extras

When I am building a new ship I cannot add the "extras".
I can see them, if I click on a part it appears on the design screen but I cannot figure out how to attach them to the ship.
Can anybody tell me how to place this parts on the ship ?

Some more info would be nice

Like what version are you using, which race are you using the ships for, does this happen on all ships etc...

I'm new, too, and it took me a minute to figure it out. You see those red dots? You need to attach stuff to them, using the TIP OF THE MOUSE pointer. It's easiest if you rotate the ship by using the thing in the upper right.
