How do I get out of debt?

I'm in a game now where I have gone so far into debt that all research and construction on EVEYRTHING has halted. I've lowered the debt a little bit, but not by much and it's taken forever. So there are twoparts to this:

1-How od I get out of debt first of all, and

2-Once I know how to get out of debt, how od I speed up the process of getting out of it?

Thanks

here are the steps:
1. rise tax as high as possible without anger (red) your people.
2. lower your spending as low as possible, 0% if you want to speed it up.
3. sell some stuff to other races at hte highest price that you can get. ships, techs, planets, anything that you are willing to part. specially techs, if you sell one to one race then sell the same tech to EVERYONE ELSE.

step 2 will be applied at 0% automatically once you owe more than 500bc which is where you are at right now.
good luck.

I thought that once you got into debt it automatically halted your spending completely until you were out of debt. Other than that, MonkeyLogic is correct, raising taxes are the best way to get out of debt faster.

Oh, and anyone else see the irony in someone whose nickname has 'Gipper' in it being in debt and unsure how to get out?

well, spending is not halted until -500bc. so you could keep on producing for many turns while keep debt at -499bc... but then you won't be able to buy anything (require a positive treasury), and too many turns in debt (even at -1bc) would cause a special morale issue (can't remember the details right now). take a guess on how I know this...

about selling stuff. just remember, only sell stuff that you are willing to part. some weaponry and production tech could help some races in a significant way that they may become overpowering later on in the game and use further researched tech (based on the one you sold to them) against you. now, take another guess on why I...

The trick is not to lose control of your economy. I have found that by spreading quickly to colonize planets, but taking a few turns before you start producing stuff on the planet makes the colony fees a WHOLE LOT LESS debt causing. In fact, a new colony that is not producing anything gains you 3bc a turn.

The population of that planet will rise and soon you'll be able to start building projects there and still spend less than the population is paying in taxes. It is a tough thing to do, but it works wonders on your standing power when the time comes.

Never go to zero production. Never go so broke that you can't get out of it quickly. And if you do, make sure you have a lot of technology that you are willing to sell.
