Alliances : How to?

How do I make an alliance

I reasearched alliance and the text says this

"Enables you to negotiate alliances with other civilizations."

When I speak to them, the option to make an alliance is not there.

I've built a few embassies, is there another building I need?
More inflence?
better trade?

So what am I missing to make this option available?

Read the forum. There have been about 4 posts asking this in the past day or so. One is right next to this in the list at the time of writing!

You need to have "close" relations with the race you want to ally with. Giving them money or techs can make them like you, within reason.

Man I am glad somebody else asked this to it was driving me crazy They should say something in the book it was killing me.

One more dumb question, is there any way to demand a race surrender. I was smoking one race and he ended up surrendering to another less powerful one Oh well I think that is probably just tuff luck

Oh one last thing

THIS GAME ROCKS

Using the search function can be useful

Heh, I thought I was on the verge of victory against another race. I opened up the diplomacy window, saw "surrender" under my side, clicked on it assuming I was demanding he surrender. Needless to say, when he told me he accepted my surrender, my first reaction was WTF?!; my second reaction was to burst out laughing when I realized what I had done.
Oh well, it was a learning experience.

But back to the question; is there a way to demand another race surrender?

Or is there anyway to mod out the surrender option? some races give up far too easily

I think this points out a need to make the diplomacy options a bit clearer. I did the same thing with the surrender option.
Maybe some tooltips would help here?

I think it might be clearer to have all the diplomatic options on the table, but if you select one that isn't gonna fly, then have the alien ambassador tell you why he wont go for it and what you could do to make it happen.

Yes, and also have them remember past gifts. In the campaign I've had situations where I have given 3 major techs to the Altarians (Medium Scale Building, my best lasers, etc.) because I wanted them to be strong and they had no tech to offer in return.

The next time I checked the diplomacy screen, they had some tech that I wanted. I asked for it & they said I was asking for handouts or some such thing.

It's a small point, but it would be nice if they remembered all you've done for them and took that into account. Now I just save my techs until they've got something to trade for it, which is silly behavior for two allied races fighting to the death against their mortal enemy.
