Good Sci-Fi novels/series

Is this off-topic enough :P

Since this is a Sci-Fi based game, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions regarding good Sci-Fi novels to read.

I've managed to get addicted to Peter F. Hamilton's "Night's Dawn" trilogy and the Commonwealth Saga. I keep trying to figure out how to make the various races in GalCiv2 but I haven't made it that far yet. Wormholes between worlds would be awesome though

Problem is, now that I've read all of his books and there's no more coming out until next year, I'm stuck for good Sci-Fi reading materials. Any ideas?

Oops. I wanted to add a caution about the Lensman series..... If you read them, you may start to notice that the stories all follow a similar patten.... I'm not going to spoil them for you. I'm just letting you know that Doc Smiths imagination was a little limited when it came to an actual plot change.

David Weber's Honor Harrington series and John Ringo's Posleen universe spring to mind. Fun reads, they are.

You forgot the Foundation novels: Forward the Foundation, Second Foundation, and Foundation and Earth

Let me add one more both of you missed. Prelude to Foundation. And of course there are the Foundation novels and short stories written by other authors, noticable Foundation's Fear, Foundation and chaos, Foundation Triumph.

Actually, all those books were mentioned earlier in this thread, especially since most people automatically include them in the original series.    The exception to this is the 2nd Foundation Trilogy (written by Bear, Benford, & Brin), which is rightly considered to be a separate series. I myself didn't care much for them, although Foundation & Chaos and Foundation's Triumph were okay. Foundation's Fear was particularly bad, however; it's easily one of the worst sci-fi novels I've ever read. Still, the rest of the series is superb!
