Hasting's has an introductory membership offer: not only do you get a free 2-liter of Coke (long gone, now), but you have 1/2 off movie rentals for the first two week. That first week was taken up by a spring break and a lot of G and PG movies (my favorite of which was Wallace & Grommit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit; I especially liked the way the 3-year old I was hanging with said the movie title).
This week, now that I'm alone again, I've been renting more grown-up movies. (No, I'm not that lonely.)
The last batch was 40-year Old Virgin, the unrated version of Dukes of Hazzard, and the Ultimate Avengers. Alright, that's a dubious grouping for me to claim 'more grown-up' status, but bear with me. I was looking for dumb, goofy comedies, and I picked well. I wanted the sort of mind-numbing 'fun' that I expected from these movies, and I wasn't disappointed.
Dukes of Hazzard was certainly fluff. I enjoyed it, but it definitely wasn't something I could call "good".
40-Year Old Virgin had an odd blend of 'Something About Mary' style raunchy comedy and romantic comedy.
Ultimate Avengers... okay, it's not a dumb comedy, but it is a cartoon. Based on the Marvel comics series The Ultimates, which has been described as "Not your father's Avengers," this is another attempt at a grimmer, grittier book (and a new stab at that in the cartoon realm). It was neat to see (versions of) these characters in action: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Giant Man, Wasp, and Black Widow. I enjoyed it, but I'm a giant comic book geek, so take that with a grain of salt.
