Linux on PS3

According to one of the latest press releases the PS£ isn't coming out till november( ) but I'm not too concerned cause I don't play consoles much, however another thing in the press release was that it would have a hard drive and run LINUX, I wonder what this means for the future of computing, and maybe stardock should join the linux revolution O_o

Well, since the PS3 isn't a computer, I doubt it has anything at all to do with the future of computing.

Well, actually, consoles are computers. Heck, my xbox has more processor power than my desktop at present.

What Linux Revolution? I don't see any...

Posting from Linux!! GalCiv2 is one of the few reasons I still use Windows. . .

Anyway, unless the PS3 allows one to use a keyboard and mouse, that it uses Linux is only interesting to the geek in me. In a practical sense, it's just another operating system.

The ps3 has usb ports so you should beable to use keyboard and mouse but the interesting thing it if linux is on the ps3 it can be very good news hehe because if you look at this site Link you will see that it lets windows games work on linux they have done it for civ4 and if the ps3 lets this program work for it i might not have anyneed for my computer for awhile

Apparently the reason Sony wants to run Linux on PS3 is that it allows them to classify it as a computer, which lowers costs for them. I believe there are less taxes associated with computers than with videogame consoles.

maybe it's got nothing to do with it, but there are export regulation rules as well... remember the ps2, it was supposed not to be sold to people in Iran, Cuba, etc... since it was said to be used for guiding missiles.
never heard that sort of crap about PC's.

A PS2 guided missile would blow up in their face right after pressing the fire button!

that ps2linux link i posted up there had a thing on PS2s being networked to create 'cheap' supercomputers. it's best asset is it's sub-$100 (used) price tag.

Know I agree that the PS3 is not going to do much for the computer world, but Consoles and Computer and so much alike. They are have the same components the main difference is that you can upgrade everything in a computer, and well you reall can't do it for the console, well I mean i am sure it is pooible but would not be worth the time a effort. Now PS3 may make an impact on Linux itself but not sure if it would be that might. Linux seems to be doing just fine and has evolved into a pretty decent OS from what it was 5 years ago, it still is not as going as Microsoft and I still do use Microsoft alot mainly for C++ Development, for Visual Studio, and Gaming, WoW, GalCiv 2, Elder Scrolls 4, etc..., even tho Microsoft is now starting to do some stuff with the programming for windows like requirering you to include code that you might not even use but if you don't you will get a performce hit on your app. Now two of the biggest things that I think is hold Linux back are 1. Software developers are not building the applications to support linux. Now being a Developer I really don't blame software developers not trying to support linux becuase it is quite hard to program for linux and make it so that it will work on each distro, but this is the second reason I think Linux is being hold back, there is not standard of libraries and such. I can develop on, lets stay Suse 10 which i am doing right now, but that would be the only distro I could virify it works on becuase RedHet may have a different version on a certian library which make my code fail on it. what I would have to do it either find a way of coding it so it works for both or compile for Suse then go into RedHat change to code accordingly, then recompile for that distro, just makes ot a pain.

Sorry about my rant on Linux, just come out but that is my opinion.

Heh. Galciv2, Final Fantasy 11, and a handful of development tools are the only reasons I still use Windows too.

Yea, I am trying to do more on linux just to get experaince on it but I am really only able to do webprogramming on it and C++ Programming to but I really don't like it becuase there is not editor on Linux that can compare to Visual Studio and it a decent price becuase I have connections and able to get visual studio dirt cheap.

I use KDevelop for all C++ and Python development that I do. It's a great IDE, though its version of Intellisense could use some work.

It is a fact that, sadly, PC gaming is on the verge of death. Today consoles are leading prettymuch in every single gaming genre. Except you want desperately to play Civilization or GalCiv II for that matter there is absolutely no sense that a gamer should buy a PC.

On the topic of PS3 NOT being a computer. This is a tricky issue. Many of the comments posted here seem to be coming from relatively young people I would say. I don't think it's the way you can upgrade it, that makes a machine a computer.

If that's the case the IBM PC (and its clones) would have been the ONLY computers known to mankind. (prettymuch)

I will not state anything. Just ask some questions:

What IS a console?
The CBM Amiga A500 and Sony PS2 share many attributes. Both of them can be upgraded in very small ways. Both of them let you play games simply by inserting the game disc into the machine.

Was CBM Amiga A500 a computer? If yes why? Is it the keyboard? PS2 supports both keyboard and mouse input and even comes with its own BASIC interpreter (on a CD) On the other hand you could use your Amiga without touching your keyboard EVER.

Is the CBM C64 a computer or console? Most PCs today are less upgradable than those in the older days. Are they consoles now?

Fact??? Are you sure you know what that word means. I've been hearing console fanboys say that computer gaming is dying since Nintendo first came out.

Except maybe flight sims, first person shooters, wargames, strategy games, real time strategy games, MMORPG (WoW), Sim games, retro gaming, D&D style RPGs, and probably a few more. But other than all those I guess your right.
