Can I copy core ship designs and modify them in the ship designer?

Much as I like the ship designer, I often find myself just wanting to tweak the core designs rather than build a new one from scratch. Is there a way to copy the core designs so I can modify them as though they were user designs?

This would be nice as a new feature to 'upgrade' the core ships. This is so ships don't look to vastly different near the beginning of the game.

I wonder if there's some kind of work around by copying the ship config files, renaming them etc. I think you'd probably have to make a template ship first to create the shipclass file, then copy the original ship, rename it to the same name as the shipclass file.....

All total guesswork though! Never tried it as I like making my own ships!

Just a thought, copy them to the user folder (\documents and settings\user\applicationdata\galciv\etc...), rename them and mod them there. do it by hand... might work. as I said its just a thought and I havent tried it yet.

Highlite the design in the ship builder.
Press upgrade
Add / modify components
Save under a new name
Voila

Core ships are unmodifiable.
