Need Campaign help...

Hello all, I'm new to the game and would like some general advice on playing the campaign.

I'd prefer to play through the campaign before playing sandbox games, I figured this would be easier, but I'm having a hard time of it.

I've started the campaign over a number of times and keep getting similar results = Enemy attacks me with a much stronger military.

Some basic starter advice would be helpful,

Such as...

Should I take the middle planets right away or let my allied AI buddy do it?

Can I win the first mission by influence or only by military strength?

I seem to always have the best economy, but the weakest military, and eventually fall behind on all other categories even though I control more planets. Getting frustrated , I appreciate any help given.

PS. If the enemy AI doesn't attack me on his own he just builds ships and waits in his corner of space until I approach him, one game I played all day long just researching, decided to attack him finally out of boredom and found out he was 4 tech levels stronger than me.

In general, the main missions you have to win by military. But the alternative missions you can (sometimes have to) win by influence. So far I've found 3 alternative missions--one if you decide to lose the Siege mission, two if you decide to lose the one immediately after that.

Have you considered that you may have figured wrong? In sandbox, i find that at low difficultys, the AI leave's you alone and war among themselves till you join the fray. This would differ at higher difficultys, of course.

I beat the first mission tonight, took me all day....is this normal?

I teched up to laser 3 ignoring almost everything else, cranked out defenders and swarmed the enemy planets.

It was pretty silly, my defenders attacked the ships the enemy built as soon as they went into orbit.

I had to keep reinforcing my defenders while researching (forever) my way to troop transports. 8 Transports later he gave up and I beat the mission. (yay)

The game was quite sloppy, hopefully the next mission will go smoother.

Ive had problems where on the 3rd mission Siege the dread lords just come and attack my planets pretty much straight away, when I looked at the damage of one of them it was 55! I hadnt even research laser 3 yet!

Difficulty was on Begginer! surely this should not be happening.

In the end I had to resort from cheating and researched all the tech, 35-50 turns later I won on influence.

I believe the mission makes clear that you are supposed to avoid the dread lords. Im at this mission too but haven't given it a seriou sattempt yet. after a certain period the dread lords will attack your planets, but I believe the technologies you have (or the ones close by) will be sufficient to ward off the dread lords that attack you. I know when they attaked they had like 10 troops but had a massive advantage of like 790 to 3 or something so my 10,000 troops was down to like 6000 by the end or something.

Anyhow, I think your wrong and that the difficulty setting is completely fine.
