Need advice from the pros

I'm really new to this game and so far I've been having tons of trouble keeping up with the ai on normal difficulty. Most of the time they have better research, influence and a stronger military than me, even if i have an equal or greater number of decent planets under my control. What are some good strategies for keeping your empire alive for any and every kind of play / victory? I tend to prefer to focus on fighting but any advice is welcome.

Economy is the key in this game. I was used to playing Stars!, where production and mining were everything. There really wasn't any economic model in that game. In GalCiv, you really have to build a strong economy so that you can push the industry slider toward 100%. Being able to do that means that you'll come much closer to utilitising your colonies' full production and research potential.

Also, use the industry focus buttons in the colony management screen. If you have a colony that's not working on social projects, set it to focus on military if you're having it build ships or on research if you're not. When you are working on social projects set it to manufacturing. The biggest reason for doing this is that when you're not actively building any social projects, any money put towards it will be wasted. The focus buttons allows you to divert those funds on a per-colony basis.

Money=Stable economy=Sliders up to max= Catch up/buy techs= get ahead in techs=sell for money= repeat as necessary.

well it is said "There's nothing quite as wonderful as money"

My Latin quotes are rusty, but I think it was Herodotus that said sinum bellum, pecunium infinatum. The sinews of war are infinite money.

Herodotus was Greek not Roman. Cicero is often credited with that phrase, though it had been used before.

Economy is the key in this game
While it is important, i would hve to disagree. Military Power is key to this game, even a mediocre economy can maintain a massive force, you have the military power-the other civs do what they have to do to stay at peace. If not, take there planets and its an automatic economy upgrade.

Ofc, military power is relative. You can have a handful of ships and run over if you wish to go down that road. I've personally always been fond of that approach. Just a few god-like ships and hell lotta bodies.

If you haven't read the "newbie" guide, I suggest you do so. Starting up a colony with a few factories is probably a good idea and changing the balance between research and production in the beginning is important. Teching the necessary tech for quicker production and quicker research (as well as eco obviously). With production built, you can get your research facilities and market places upgraded quickly - then switch to tech, get some weapon tech with 1 tech / turn, build a few ships so you won't be annihilated. Tech more, as far as you feel confident doing and then get a few more ships. I like the defensive line in the beginning (obviously needed if you wanna tech up high and fast), but I guess it's just the other end of the chain. =]
