Private Trade Routes

It seems, from the first few games that I've played, that as soon as I go to war with a civ that is doing trade with me, I get a message instantly that trade route x is too dangerous to continue etc.

Now, this didn't happen straight away in GalCiv 1.
At least 2 trade ships had to be destroyed first but in this game the very act of attacking an opponent seems to render any trade route that's running between a planet of yours and theirs, too dangerous to continue.

Is this meant to be? I preferred it in GalCiv 1

If you where an american businessman in, say, the 70's and for some reason where doing business with the soviet union... wouldn't you stop if the USA and USSR went to war?

simple logic

This happened in GalCiv 1 too. You can't trade with a race you're at war with, and you never could.

Yes it did.

This is the same way as GC I. A freighter, once destroyed, had another one automatically created at the begining of the trade route as long as it was not going to the warring AI's planet.

Wouldn't there be some brave souls willing to make smuggling runs?

When two nations are at war and trade goods become scarce, low supply high demand...don't tell me some brave soul wouldn't find a way to get rich quick.

Well the way Gal Civ 2 sets up trade routes, essentially they are massive undertakings of commerce that are rarely taken by corporations. Costing billions of credits..

A smuggler can't even compete.

A smuggler doesn't pay income taxes

The Galactic achievement "Privateer" solidifies your trade routes so they cannot be attacked, and war doesn't seem to disrupt them.

Well, let me qualify that, it DOES effect trade routes that are now going to your advesary.
