Another Use for Colony Ships?

Population Control

Can you use colony ships to transfer population from one inhabited planet to another? If so, this would be a great way to relieve population pressure on an overcrowded planet and, at the same time, build up the population of a new colony.

You could, but except for the purpose of relieving population pressure, there's not much point. Unlike many other games in the genre, GalCiv2 has a flat population growth rate, affected only by morale.

Actually, ferrying population with colony ships works very well.

Troop Transports can also ferry population between planets and they have additional uses in the later game over colony ships.

It works but using transports are better. Get a bit of miniturization and the Adv Troop mod and you can move thousands at a time.

Thanks for all the replies. For me, the advantage of colony ships over transports is that you have colony ships from the beginning and don't get transports until you're fairly well into the game.

You should be developing planetary invasion well before you get major overpopulation pressure (if you don't then your opponents will).

If you use the cargo hull for transports then colony ships can be upgrade into transport ships. The troop module is a little smaller but costs just a bit more. The adv troop module that holds twice as many troops is quite a bit smaller, but costs a lot more. With a lot of engines, it's speed might make up for lack of hp/weapon/defense.

Another option you have is to upgrade your leftover colony ships to freighters for ~300 gold. A quickie freighter right when you research/trade for trade is useful and saves you the time from building it.
