Terraforming...

If you research to this can you actually terraform planets that are rated 0 Class?

i got this tech for the first time last nite, and as far as i can tell, no, you cannot terraform a planet.

it seems like it just opens the door for building a orbital terraformer (i think thats what they call it) automatically converts any unusable terrain available (not all the empty squares, just the ones you can upgrade to usable terrain) instanlly and for free.

someone plz correct me if i'm wrong

Yeah, I would like to see it help all planets, if only adding one section. Mars is a good example where it should be able to be improved slightly to a class 5 planet. Still not a great place to live compared to the class 15 ones but still it doesnt make much sense to not allow class 4 to go to 5.

Terraforming allows tiles that are Red to be built upon. But no, it doesn't allow the habitation of level 0 planets.

From what I understand each level of PQ improvement tech increases planetary quality 10%, ergo:

Without PQ ability,
Mars 4
with Soils -> 4 x 1.1 = 4.4 (no tile yet)
with Habitat -> 4.4 x 1.1 = 4.84 (no tile yet)
with Terraform -> 4.84 x 1.1 = 5.324 (should be 1 new tile to be developed)

The PQ ability % gets multipied in at the start of this sequence...

0 qualtiy planets can be thought of as gas giants or iceballs that can't be developed without the aid of outside events.

The only way I have seen this is with a Precursor artifact. Just got that event last night, every uninhabitable planet in a 2 sector radius went to a Class 14!

Has this happpend?

Terraforming Tech is useless to those that want to do Neutral Alignment ( one of the benefits of being neutral is to open up all available spaces in your planets which is the same effect as the "orbital terraformer" galactic wonder. )

would be nice to at least build an outpost or something on those class 0 worlds. They should be used for something and not just be clutter / decoration.

I've had it happen once, but it seems pretty rare for a class 0 planet to become available.

I had an event where a planet was PQ 0 and then after " volcanoes and storms" it became a PQ 8 a decent planet, the only problem was that the United Nations? had to vote on who gets it, the plus side of that was that i had close realations with everyone, and i had 45% of the vote which meant i got the planet. sadly no bonus squares.

One time I had the United Planets vote for the same thing, I was the lucky winner that time too. But then when I closed the UP screen, I couldn't find my bright new shiny planet anywhere

I just had an event where Jupiter became a class 9 planet! Unfortunately, I had some debt bug force me to restart.

Agreed! How cool would it be to be able to build a special type of 'hostile world exploration ship' to go down on certain planets with a solid or liquid surface, such as ice or water planets.

Surely some creative people could think of some use out of them, and maybe mod in something... obviously nowhere near the benefits of a full planet, but still some way to utilize them in a way that makes them fun and not just eyecandy.

If you do a custom race there is an ability which will add 10 20 or 30% to planet quality.

I got the orbital terraformer, built it on my beginning planet and and i see absolutely no difference. Mind you, i already did all of the soil, habitat and terraforming upgrades as they came, but i have no clue as to what the orbital terraformer does. does anyone have info on this tech??

i took a look for it in the wiki. no results found.

i saw the exact same thing happen to the AI. when the UP screen poped up, it said something like "the planet ." note that no planet was named. after one of the AIs got the vote, there was no new planet on the map, and I was playing a small map so I'm pretty confident I didn't overlook anything. this reminds me of another similiar issue through the UP that involves a planet, yet in the UP description theres no planet name.

it's as if the game UP routine figures that the next council will be for a planet reward, and when it tries to pull a valid planet and fails, it still continues on with the same UP council issue, but with no planet. luckily the game doesnt crash, so for that

btw, i've received a class 0 transformed to class 9 planet through the UP and it's really nice! the only downside was that it was far away from my sphere of influence. I ended up giving it to those green aliens, who in the following turns surrendered to me because of their war with the drengi. I guess the planet gift really made them like me

It converts all upgradeable spaces to green.

This bug is already documented.

Thios has been requested numerous times. No love yet. maybe GC III.

Dosent quite work that way. Some planets have multiple upgradeable tiles. Some have none.

And it all in PlanetDescriptions.

when i got the planet it had .5 bil pop and it was one of the 0pq planets beforehand. And after i exited the UP i had to go manualy to the planet to ad improvments so some people might just forget it because its where no one would make it into

I can understand that you can't live on a ball of gas... but 'regular' planets should be terraformable into habitable planets... I mean.. it makes sense.

I have a planet in my current game with a crazy number of upgradeable tiles. The planet itself was only class 8 to begin with, but had three nice bonus tiles on it. It had 6 yellow tiles, 4 orange tiles, and 4 red ones. On the other side I've had worlds with no upgradeable tiles at all. It seems like I get more tiles on worlds which aren't so great to begin with, and the planets that are already pretty liveable don't have much room for growth. Makes sense, but it could just be my random sampling too.

Maybe those PQ 0 planets ARE balls of gas.

Hi!
...orbital terraformer...

IMO just another useless "wonder". When I get to it, I usually have ALL available tiles already terraformed. If it would be like in GC1, where it gives about 10% increase in planet quality, (a new tile on every planet in GC2) it would be usefull. So I see it as a waste of a free tile.

Mars 4
...with Terraform -> 4.84 x 1.1 = 5.324 (should be 1 new tile to be developed)

I agree. Since most AIs' smaller planets in starting star system can be terraformed, Mars should get that possibility too.
