James Dobson, head of the evangelical Christian group Focus on the Family, has received a personal note from Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito commending them for their help in his confirmation process, RAW STORY has learned.

The letter was posted by Progress Action Now. The group has also posted audio of Dobson reading the letter during his radio broadcast. The letter follows.

Dear Dr. Dobson,

This is just a short note to express my heartfelt thanks to you and the entire staff of Focus on the Family for your help and support during the past few challenging months.

I would also greatly appreciate it if you would convey my appreciation to the good people from all parts of the country who wrote to tell me they were praying for me and for my family during this period.

As I said when I spoke at my formal vestiture at the White House last week, the prayers of so many people from around the country were a palpable and powerful force.

As long as I serve on the Supreme Court, I will keep in mind the trust that has been placed in me.

I hope we'll have the opportunity to meet personally at some point in the future. In the meantime, my entire family and I hope that you and the Focus on the Family staff know how much we appreciate all that you have done.

Sincerely Yours, Samuel Alito

Were there any connections between Alito & FOTF before his nomination? I mean other than broad philosophical agreement.

I personally abhor Dobson - he's a bigot, pure & simple, just like Pat Robertson. He may be a kind and personable individual one-on-one, but he's a bigot, nonetheless, and I despise his intolerant, arrogant self-righteousness. He's the kind of religious leader that prompted the Founders to make sure our government was secular, if you ask me.

I have no real problem with Alito thanking people for expressions of support during the nomination process and I hope your suspicions turn out to be unfounded.

I'm not aware of any prior relationship, "brokeback" (good one kb) or otherwise.

I think Alito could have chosen his words more carefully. I'm sure he probably would have if he'd known Dobson was going to be waving the letter around.

So Alito was not confirmed by vote but rather by prayer?

Sounds like it;

"I hope we'll have the opportunity to meet personally at some point in the future. In the meantime, my entire family and I hope that you and the Focus on the Family staff know how much we appreciate all that you have done."

I personally don't see anything wrong with it. If it said "hey maybe now we can finally get abortion banned", then we might have something to howl about. If this is all they can dig up, I guess Alito is pretty clean. And it seems to me that it was a very traumatic process to go through for his family. I wouldn't want to see my husband attacked and accused. The clip of his wife crying through the confirmation hearings stuck wtih me. If FOTF prayers, letters and support helped her through that good on 'em. They deserve a shout out.

I'm with Loca.

I don't see anything wrong with writing a letter of thanks to people you respect and who support you.

Are you saying BECAUSE Dobson is evangelical, the SC Justice should not have anything to do with him?

If you are not saying that, then let the man have the friends he chooses. He seems competent to me in his field.

Sharing the letter is not a breach of confidence or anything of the sort. Dobson asked people to pray and was showing them how appreciated they were.....

This seems like much ado about nothing.

It definitely is "much ado about nothing"....well maybe not the much part. I just thought it was kinda odd is all. Now if Pat Robertson got a letter too, that would be a problem.

All I can see is that every person in the US has thier fair share of bad friends, bad situations and/or bad luck. The odds of finding a person who is so clean, that Mr. Clean could get a run for his money, sounds almost impossible. But I guess we can't deny the human race the right to nit-pick a persons life. Hell, if I ran for President and won, the stories about me having a suspended licence for a year and a half, no insurance, no registration, a warrant for my arrest for not showing up to court to pay my tickets (which I never got the letter), getting fired from Toy-R-Us for stealing bike parts(man one does stupid things when young), getting high on second hand pot smoke on prom night (too much pot in the air), have children out of wed-lock, etc, would come out of the woodworks faster than Flash could change his underware.

Uh huh, we've never heard that one before.

What did he say that is wrong or out of place? What wouldn't have been said had he known Dobson would air the letter?

His second sentence, "I would also greatly appreciate it if you would convey my appreciation to the good people from all parts of the country who wrote to tell me they were praying for me and for my family during this period," sounds like he states the opposite. He wanted it spread.

I don't seem to see the issue. He believes in the power of prayer? He felt supported by FOTF, and is thankful? He isn't the most concise writer?

I don't place much stake in prayer or FOTF, but I fail to see the problem.

As I said above;

It's odd and gives the appearance of inappropriateness (to me personally) only when looked at in conjunction with all of Dobson's statements and grandstanding in the fall, when Roberts, Miers, and Alito were nominated.
