Minor Civs: Befriend or Conquer?

Minor Civs: Befriend or Conquer?

Just curious of other's playing styles. When you come upon a minor civ, do you kill/take their planet or befriend them, and why?

Ok, silly question as I don't have the game yet... (it's in the post )

When you trade your tech for money, or other tech, I assume you keep the tech you traded to them right?

Befriend them, then conquer them later. Even if you are good. It is for their own protection. Really! (You don't want the drengin to conquer them and have to deal with them as neighbors now would you?)

And yes Tycow, you keep the tech. It's just sharing for cash when tech-trading is concerned.

I like to trade them all technologies, and give them time to build all capitals, THEN i conquer it so i'll have a VERY good central planet with all capitals

Yep. You keep the tech. The trade is really just sharing the knowledge with the minor civilization.

I like to conquer them, but only after I have traded for all of their influence and money. They always have lots of influence, so you can really increase your influence by taking that off of their hands. (I went from approximately 150K influence to approximately 500K influence in only a few turns this way)

I keep them around, but I usually play a "good" race. I like it when they are in my influence and I can both tax them and trade with them. Plus they respond to me "requests" for tech very favorably since I defend them from any other race rolling over them. For example in my current game I have been asked for help from the Paulus 3 times against the Aceans and have helped them each time, always taking a border planet or two for myself before declaring peace. So the Paulus give me almost anything I ask for, and I give them tech in exchange for influence (going for influence victory).

If I was an evil race (like the Yor) I would grind the to the ground as soon as I got Troop transports .

I keep 'em friends until another race starts to attacjk them and win, then I'll swoop in and conquer them so the AI doe'snt get control of the system.

KEEP THEM ALIVE! they are worth going to war for! I have found these minor races EXTREMELY usefull. Most of them ahrdly research and, for some reason, are able to accumulate a MASSIVE treasury every couple of months. With some diplomat skill, you can sell these minor civs some crappy techs that everyone already has. warpdrive MKII for example.. 800 or so from each minor race.. x6 on giant maps.. thats nearly 5000 credits for sharing a tech that no one wants anymore.

The stupid Acreans attacked me once, when i was persuing tech victory. they had litterally, 10x my military might and i won simply because of the seemingly unlimited supply of funds from these little guys.

The minor races are very useful, especially on the larger maps. They are good for trade routes and tech trading (for more money); and if they aren't killed too soon by someone else, they usually become pretty powerful. And since you don't need to take their planets for a military win, they can be of great help. For every planet controlled by a minor race, thats one less planet you need to take for a conquest victory...

I love the minor races.. more of them. They need 2-3 custom AI scripts, and they need to be able to expand and stand up for themselves.....

We need Teddy Bears as well.. the Snathi are so kool, but We need the Teddy Bears.....

2X : eXploit, eXterminate.
Because they are there just for that, and if I don't do that, someone other will.
