This is an aesthetic thing but it still bugs me. About the "Red" and "Blue" states.

Republicans should be blue color and Democrats should be red.

Blue signifies conservatism (blue blood, old money, etc) and red signifies liberal (red chinese, red army, socialist, etc).

Who got this wrong? Assigning Democrats as Blue states and Republicans as red states?

This has always bugged the hell out of me. Why doesn't the media correct this?

I remember President Elect (1987) was my first election game and Reps were blue and Dems red..as it should be.

No, please, keep the Democratic Party blue and the Republicans red. My selfish reason is, of course, that this matches my favorite color and party.
A better reason is that because the blue state-red state thing has become part of U.S. culture since 2000, the game might as well reflect or at least accept that.
I know that in Canada the Liberal Party uses red and the old Progressive Conservatives blue, and that at least some Western European countries follow that. However, I think the red army comparison is too far out, and hey, when do Americans think Europeans are right about anything, anyway?
Seriously, though, if this is going to matter to a lot of players, maybe the game should let you pick your color at the start, too (or change it in a game editor). Heck, later versions of the game could let you use green for the Greens (duh) or yellow for an independent. Or perhaps an 1880s-1890s expansion pack could let you pick silver for the Democrats and gold for the Republicans.

Well, if by recent you mean before most of the people who will end up playing the game were born, then yes, it is a fairly recent thing.

We're sticking with red for Republicans and blue for Democrats because that's how it's done in the media and the game needs to reflect that.

The term "red states" and "blue states" (and now "purple states") are in our lexicon.

Whew. However: Purple? Huh?

Those are states that tend to flip flop in various elections, for instance Oklahoma is Red, Oregon is Blue, but, republicans hope at least, California is purple.

The poster is right. Prior to 2000 the GOP got blue and DEMS got red. I am still trying to figure out why the switch was made.
