Couple Questions

Never played GCI, but played all the CIV games except 4. Love GCII and have a couple questions. For the record, I read the manual.

1. During the yearly meeting with all of the civs, can I negotiate with other civs on how they vote?

2. In the Trade screen, after I've researched the Alliance tech, I don't see Alliance as something I can offer, even if the other civ has the Alliance tech. How do I create alliances?

3. In the Trade screen, how can I tell what effect my diplomacy is having on the trades?

4. If I send a constructor to mine a resource, but there are no planets near the resource, does my civ still get the benefits of the resource, or do I have to have a planet within the influence of the Starbase?

5. I forget where I saw it, but I read something that mentioned building an economy starbase on a trade route. Should I be building them on trade routes, or can the route just be in the zone of influence?

6. In reference to espionage, there's also mention of destablizing the civ. Are these tied together with that single slider in the foreign civs screen? Am I adversely affecting the civs I'm working together with by spying on them?

Thanks for any info and thanks to the GC team for such a great game!!

1) Not in any manner that I know of, but you CAN buy votes from them (And minor races.) in the standard diplomacy screen. Buy enough and you can swing the thing. This is one thing I'd really like to see changed, actually.

2) You have to be 'close' with the desired aliens, I believe, before alliances become a possibility.

3) I don't know if there's a way to see directly, but the text descriptions are usually quite accurate. Ultimately I suppose someone could find out all the tech costs of things and play quite a few games to find out how different things affect these prices, but that'd be a length task.

4) As I understand it, bonuses from starbases are empire-wide, if they're mining bases.

No idea for 5 or 6, sorry. Hopefully someone else can help with those, and clean up any mistakes I've made.

5. I think that you just need to build the starbase so it's zone of influence covers the route, and whenever the little baby freighter is in the part of the route that's within the ZOI, it gets the starbase bonuses. I think.

6. Destablization was taken out of the game, IIRC.

1) Indeed, your only chance of controlling the vote is to have >50% of the influence. And as Huxley Hobbes stated, you can "purchase" influence from your prey. Picking on those weaker than you and then offering Peace can net you alot of influence. Especially the minor races.

2) I don't think I've ever seen Alliance appear before close, but then there is still a threshold to be met. I've often been close and still not been given the option.

3) AFAIK, there is no way to tell. Take it on faith. The only way to get a better deal is to raise it even more, but then, how do you know that worked?

4) Starbases built on a resource apply that bonus to your race, no need for planets in their radius.

5) The route should only need to be with the radius.

6) This feature was present in the last beta, but has since been removed.

Thanks for the replies.

Now I have another dilemma. My new Dell PC will be ariving between 2pm-5pm today. Should I spend tonight rebuilding the box the way I prefer it, or finish my current GCII game?
