Modding is coming

Next week

GalCiv II is extensively moddable.

Everything in the game is in an open format of some kind.  Screens can be modified with DesktopX (www.desktopx.net). The models are .X files, the graphics PNG and the data XML.

One user, Winterlight, has already figured out how to put in his own .X files.

Look closely at the ship since it's not textured. There's no polygon limit in GalCiv II.

Most games tend to start to look dated because they limit how many polygons they can do in their models.  GalCiv II has no limit, your system performance is the only limit.  So there's no limitation on how big your textures can be or how detailed your ships except your own system performance.

This was done so that the game can be kept "new" for years to come.

The post that discusses that Bird of Prey can be found here:

Thats a pretty sweet ship!

Will stardock be releasing a "How-To" guide on basic modding? Or is trial and error in season?

Yes, we will do several guids, I have a few planed for textureing and moding screens, and Boogieback and I will be putting togeather some docs for the 3D modles as well. Once we can get a moment to focus on it. They should all be avalible on this site before to long.

Yes.  As soon as things calm down a bit, we'll be putting out extensive modders guides.

One might argue that the GalCiv content IS a mod on top of the game engine. It's all very moddable.

There are B5 blender models available...

A Star Trek mod would be fairly easy to do as well
Just replace the alien races with equivalents.
I just wish there were Ferengi ship designs out there...

Starbase modding would be appreciated.
I'd like to be able to change base HP and add additional types of Starbase.

Also, the ability to place a "Max number per ship" tag on modules would be helpful.
Alternately, specifying "Max number of module type" for a given hull would be even better.

You could take just about any model and plop them into Blender, it accepts a lot of formats, and has plug-ins to support the rest.

sweet, lol. I want a Leviathan from Farscape. Or, no, I want Al'Kesh or a Ha'Tak from Stargate.
