Ship building WAY too time consuming

Easy solution!

You REALLY need to be able to copy existing ship designs into the editor when you are designing a new ship class.

Example: Copy old colony ship or constructor design (and its appearance) - then in editor just delete the old engines and put your newest ones on, etc....Instead of having to design the whole thing from scratch and/or try to figure out how to make a brand new ship look similar to the old one, etc...

Without this simple feature, by the time I design something as simple as a decent looking new colony ship or constructor to go warp 3 instead of warp 2, I have been pulled totally out of the game for 15-60 minutes - and forgotten to some extent what was going on and what I was trying to do on the strategic level.

Also, to be honest, for less artistically gifted people, it is very hard to make a decent looking ship period. Then, a lot of times even when I do get one I like, when I see how completely different it looks compared to the OLD one, I don't like mine anymore! lol

Hehe It's funny how some players LOVE this feature, and others really dont care for it. I personally LOVE spending 20 minutes and perfecting a design, but to each their own

We are working on a list of feature to get in for the next few updaates, and I think this feature will make it in (the "copy design" feature), though you can save your designs under a different name, which kinda has the same effect (though you still can't upgrade form Core designs).

Also, look for the ship design library, coming soon to www.galciv2.com where other players will post their creations, and you can pull from these and make ship building a less time-consuming process.

It looks like colony ships are a special case anyway. The normal ones are a bit better (in terms of how many components they carry) than anything you could design yourself at that tech level. You'd probably have to design your own from scratch anyway.

I love it too, but I'm not very good at it.

Also, I would much rather spend an hour building my brand new uber-warship than just making a colony ship move 3 instead of 2.

And I would like it when I DO spend an hour making something cool, if I would be able to use that design for as long as I want.

I always make my Fast colony, and my cheep colony. Then in every game I have them avalible on the first turn.

I enjoy designing the ships and don't find it that difficult but it can take some time. If I am in a hurry to get back to the game I just plop some engines and modules in the basic hull. The are nothing fancy but they don't look indecent.

Yeah, I would have to be one of the people that LOVE this feature. I probably spent half my time playing last night (7 hours total) just playing around in the ship creation page.
But, I could definitely see how people could get tired of it...

One solution for people seems to be, since you can save your designs from game to game... if you just create a base template ship with only Extras, and no extra weapons/modules etc, for each hull type, then each time you load up a game, you can just Upgrade that design with whatever stuff you research and save it under a new name.

I dont have it yet, but this is the feature im looking forward to playing with today!

As a feature of the game, spending your time designing ships should be avoidable. My feeling is that there is a significant number of players who couldn't care less about making cool ship designs or poring over the list of non-gameplay enhancing modules. There should be a simple way to skip the purely aesthetic aspects of the design process without ending up with a ship that looks like pure ass.

Sometimes I am willing to spend the time, and sometimes I am not. Why should I be forced to spend the time in either case?

The AI designs its own ships, so there must be algorithms already in game for designing new ships from a grocery list of components. The player should be able to choose his list, hit "Auto-design", and have the game spit out 3 or so random designs incorporating all those components. If you don't like them, you can then:

A) edit one of those designs.
B) hit the button again and get 3 new designs.
C) decide you really wanted a nice looking ship this time and do your own.

I said the same thing two months ago about the Beta 5 (posted under my old nickname Lord Darx) Link
I had hoped Stardock would have added this for the final release.

Another annoying UI problem with the ship building is having to scroll through a long list of obsolete ship components. By obsolete I don't mean older, an obsolete component would be one that is superior in one of the attributes (size, cost, and value) and equal or superior in the remaining ones. For example, Plasma beam weapons would not obsolete Laser Mark V because although they are cheaper and have attack value 2 vs. 1, they are larger. Selecting a checkbox would hide/show obsolete components. Also, visible components should be sorted, listing the newest ones first.

You can just click on a hull and then click on the modules and press place. How hard is that?

thank you xan i was gonna say the same thing click component click place

hehe I am one of those that love designing ships

In fact, i went so far as to make a thread where everyone should post their screenshots of their ships

so do it

I usually have "system" and "attack" ships (the moo3 in me talking!). Rather than adding engines to my system ships, I just bolt on extra defences. But I do enjoy adding a little "bling" to my ships!

You can - just not the "core" designs. Furthermore, the game automatically imports previous designs as you research the tech, so you can easily just design each level of colony ship or whatever once and use it in every game.

Personally I feel like I'm getting my $50 worth just playing with the ship designer... I would love for them to allow us to use that independently of the game and just use whatever tech we feel like, so that the ship becomes available as you research different techs.

One thing i'd like in the ship designing is left click-dragging the view! With the bigger ships, just the rotating i cant see the details!

please give us dragging around

Also a full screen ship viewer with rotate and drag and zoom would be nice for screenshots

While I agreed at the time, I'm not sure it would be worth the effort now. Because of the rebalancing that took place during the Gamma, there are many components that would never be truely obsolete. The base Hyperdrive engine, which was a classic example of this during the Beta, is now the cheapest engine you'll ever have. Basically, most things get more expensive as they go up in tech. Some things get more cost effective and maybe smaller, but still more expensive, other things get less cost effective and smaller.

My comment was based on extensive play of the Beta5 since I did not get very far with 1.00D.6 last night (late start). If there are very few truely obsolete components then how about being able to sort based on size, cost, and/or value?

Nice to see it finally available. I think it was first suggested in this thread https://forums.galciv2.com/?ForumID=274&AID=94097 , but I could be wrong.

Well that's just it...you can't. The ship you save must be used EXACTLY as it was created in later games. If you want to put on an extra sensor or lifesupport, different engines or whatever on it, you HAVE to completely redesign a brand new ship from scratch including all the cosmetics of it.

Just putting functional parts on the basic hull looks HORRIBLE though. It doesn't remotely look like a starship. I'd just like to be able to copy the stock ships (that all look great) and change the parts when necessary without having to spend an hour designing my own decent looking ship...that never ends up looking as cool as theirs do anyway.

I think that's a reasonable request.  I'll put it on the list.
