Atari Back In Trouble

One of the Biggest Names in the Industry to Provide Pink Slips

Atari has followed-up a weak third quarter report with some additional bad news. The once premiere publisher has announced that it will be laying off some of its 250 employees in the US. On the heel of the layoffs will come the sale of all of Atari's internal development studios, which will begin after they finish their respected projects.

CEO Bruno Bonnell told MCV "We will be looking to sell our studios, but that doesn't mean that we're immediately putting a 'For Sale' sign on them. They still have important projects to finish for us."

I remember hearing that Atari was having some poor upper management issues...where the guys calling the shots only wanted to do big budget, liscensed titles after "Enter the Matrix" did so well (despite so-so reviews). Anyways, no matter whos to blame, It's always sad to see that many employees layed off.

All I can say. They are nuts if they think keeping the "management" that has run a company into the ground is a wise course, but yet they want to sell off the internal studios that ACTUALLY make them money, to other people to make them money.

I knew that when Infogrames rebranded themselves as Atari for their publishing arm, back at MOO3, that I would need to watch out for these guys.

This business strategy really makes no sense at all for the long-term. All Atari is going to do is generate some short-term cash by cannibalizing their internal assets.  How that is supposed to help the company long-term, at which point they'll be nothing left, is beyond me.
