Check On It
Album: #1's
Year: 2005
Beyonce lets men view her as a piece of meat in the grody "Check On It."
Rapper Slim Thug intros the song by naming the producer, group, and himself over scuzzy beats. It sets a seedy tone. "Swiss Beats/DC, Destiny Child/Slim Thug."
Slim Thug says that Beyonce should stay away from dorks and wannabes. She's a hot, young thing that be going out with a real man, like him. As he watches her dance, he nods in approval. He tells to pull her back out some more so he can get a better glimpse of her butt. "You need to stop playing 'round with all them clowns and the wankstas/Good girls gotta get down with them gangstas/
Go 'head girl put some back and some neck up on it/While I stand up in the background and check up on it."
In the chorus, she crows that she has an admirer. She invites him to come closer to get a good look. She tells other women it's ok if they objectify themselves. It means guys like them! "Oh boy you looking like you like what you see/Won't you come over and check up on it, I'm gone let you work up on it/Ladies let 'em check up on it, watch it while he check up on it/Dip it, pop it, twork it, stop it, check on me tonight."
In the first verse, she thinks women should show off their body parts. She knows she has caught a guy's eye. She purposely puts her back to him and sways her hips. The guy is grinning from ear to ear. Guys are impressed by her butt. She has a couple rules, though. They can ogle all they want but they can't touch. If they don't talk about what happened, she will go out with him. The guys think she's not for real. However, she says she doesn't care. She's confident that they will get excited watching her. But she needs to know that none of them are perverts first. "If you got it flaunt it, boy I know you want it/While I turn around you watch me check up on it/Oh you watchin' me shake it, I see it in ya face/Ya can't take it, it's blazin', you watch me in amazement/You can look at it, as long as you don't grab it/If you don't go braggin', I'ma let you have it/You think that I'm teasin', but I ain't got no reason/I'm sure that I can please ya, but first I gotta read you."
The chorus is sung twice.
In the second verse, her strategy to attract men is to get their attention. Then, play hard to get by dancing all around the club as they follow her around. She says that they can't get be insulting or obnoxious. If they play nice, then they can dance with her. However, they have to let her see how they move, too. She says she doesn't mean to lead the guys on. However, her goal is to satisfy them. "I can tell you wanna taste it, but I'm gone make you chase it/You got to be patient, I like my men patient/More patience, you take might get you in more places/You can't be abrasive, have to know to pace it/If I let you get up on it, you gotta make a promise/That you gone put it on me, like no one's put it on me/Don't bore me, just show me, all men talk but don't please/I can be a tease, but I really wanna please you."
In the bridge, Slim Thug has been staring at her butt the whole night. He doesn't even know what her face looks like. He promises to keep his hands to himself. However, he's tempted to grab her butt. He's enthralled by Beyonce and her girlfriends' bodies. He says he and his friends hang out at the club to gawk at women. He lies to Beyonce, saying he and his friends are harmless and won't try anything fresh. He calls dibs on Beyonce. Then, at the end, says it's he's Slim Thug again with Destiny's Child from Houston. "I'm checking on you boo, do what chu do/And while you dance I'ma glance at this beautiful view/I'm keep my hands in my pants, I need to glue 'em with glue/I'm in a trance all eyes on you and your crew
They all hot, but let me see this one's mine/It's Slim Thug and DC outta H town."
The chorus is sung four times to end the single.
Beyonce is allowing herself to be an unpaid stripper. Except she keeps her clothes on. It's telling the verses include the rules she outlines for the guys. She knows she's doing something that could endanger her.
She gives them the illusion that she is in control. However, she's actually afraid and ashamed of herself. Although she wants the men to watch her dance, she thinks they may attack her. Hence, the "hands off" rule. But she blindly assumes the men will listen to her. She doesn't think that a guy will touch her, regardless. She seems unprepared to deal with the situation if it gets out out of hand.
She also doesn't anyone to find out about what she's doing. If she thought her actions were all right, she wouldn't care. But she could get a reputation. Again, she's unaware that she already has one if she notices the same guys coming in the same night she's there. For her, the temporary boost to her self-esteem is more important than being raped. How pathetic.
Beyonce's vocals are sheepish and volatile. She doesn't seem to like the sex kitten role nor sex. She has an idea of what it is but doesn't understand it. But she figures it's all she's got. In the end, she ends up making a fool of herself.
Despite Slim Thug saying it's a Destiny's Child track, it's really only Beyonce singing. It's the most unintentional honest line in the song. Destiny's Child has been all about Beyonce. It's a blatant jab at the group, not to mention misleading.
The single is a copycat of "My Humps." While it's nowhere near as horrible, it's as repetitive and dumb.
