It's Official!

It's now official. I am officially an old fart. I was talking to my niece and had my Diamond Dog album playing in the background. She asked me who that was and I told her David Bowie. Her answer was..........."David, who?" This is the kind of stuff I used to say to my parents a long time ago. I guess they are right when they say "what goes around, comes around". Truly it does!

At least I have one child that actually likes my groups!  Zepplin, Johnny Cash, Pink Floyd, the Doors!  I dont understand half of his groups, but he knows many of mine!

Am I the only one here who simply likes the Beatles and finds most modern music (aka everything made since the 70s) really annoying?

my old fart reality check came much sooner than yours did doc, was in late 70/s and was looking to buy some concert tickets I overheard two young girls say " Oh look paul McCartney pkayed in some band before wingd"

I try to be open minded with my 15 year olds taste ,and to be honest, occasionaly I do hear something I like. But nothing beats Zeppelin...

My kids like the Beatles, but we focus on the 80s-90s bands like They Might Be Giants (who have two or three excellent childrens' albums and DVDs) and Barenaked Ladies.

Oh look paul McCartney played in some band before wings"

A. Whitney Brown used that same line back in the 80's on SNL Weekend Update.

I guess it's meant to happen to us all eventually, Drmiler... all I can do it welcome you to the club!

Mine came a little differenly. Talking with some of the kids in the youth group at church. We were talking about all their favorites, and I was impressing them to no end by keeping up. Offspring, Evanesence, Linkin' Park, and (of course) Avril Lavigne. Someone brought up AC/DC, so I figured I'd score even more "cool points" by telling them that I saw AC/DC when Bon Scot was still alive.

They all looked at me like a leper and one piped up... "Wow, you are old!" ;~D

So, I welcome to the "old fart" club. We'll show you the secret handshake and give you your keyring at the next meeting. ;~D

See, I can get around the "David Bowie" question with my kids by saying, "You know; the Goblin King from Labyrinth" (my third daughter was named by her two older sisters after the baby from the movie).

Okay, does anyone want to stop naming some of my favorite bands?

Beatles are the modern rock masters. Floyd invented the concept album, and, damn do I dislike having to introduce David Bowie as 'The Goblin King' to some new listener.

I only want to see Avril Lavinge naked but I enjoy some of her tunes...

Linkin' Park is fine but what about System of a Down for true substantive metal angst?

Type O' Negative anyone? They're the group that got me in to Seals and Croft...

AC / DC - Bon Scott.

Wow. I had no idea of Bon Scott's existence or AC/DC before the black album...similar to Metallica...but I understand there would never have been AC/DC without the man, a damn shame - his untimely death.


Doors. Goddamn Jim Morrisson was such a loser, but, then again, the Doors needed his element to become what they were - they weren't the same without him.

I very much appreciate the Morrison inspired pieces that aren't mainstream and overblown, though I'm a sucker for the horns and strings in the later Door's tunes.

Quite shocking your all's choice in music - really.

Johnny Cash - well, it doesn't get much better then a gentleman with a guitar telling it how it is, but my appreciation for him hasn't yet grown past his cover of 'Hurt' by Nine Inch Nails (who I don't care for too much anyhow..)

Good picks, guys....though we've just started...I'm sure.

Oh, yes, Zepplin, even my kid sister (14) considers their albums (yes, she said albums) required listening...

I like Pink Floyd, but I cannot really see myself as a fan.

I also like joke songs.

But the Beatles are really the only group I would consider myself a "fan" of. And even that I am mild compared to most people.

For me there is not so much music that I like vs music that I don't like, but more like music that I like vs music I can listen to without getting bored or angry vs the rest.

Music that I like: The Beatles and a large selection of what came before them.

Music I can stand: Queen, Pink Floyd, Paul Simon, some others. (Some of the individual songs would be in the "music I like" category)

The rest: Britney Spears and basically everythingreleased after the Beatles except for the afore-mentioned exceptions.

I don't know how it is where you live...but we live in a white affluent suburb and the kids here starting in elementary listen to .....RAP.

It drives me bonkers because the rap is so stale. I mean it just repeats itself over and over and over. Every song same kinda beat, same crap.

I took my ten year old to the skating rink and that's all they played for three hours. I wanted to gag.

The kids can't dance to it, they can't sing to it....what the heck good is listening to it?

When we still lived in MD, three years ago. We went to the red, hot and blue and they had a statue of Elvis. We asked the boys if they knew who it was and they said "Ace Ventura".

They now know who Elvis is because I tell them I want him to dress up like him every Halloween. No one's gone for it yet but someday I'll get my way. It was so much easier when they were little and I could push them around.

Well, I'm not a big fan of any particular group that I would know stories or nicknames and such. I was more a fun of just the music. At times I didn't even know who sang the songs and took me a while to figure it out.

I was born in '76, but my taste for music can stretch as far back as The Supremes, Richie Valens, Little Richard and Chuck berry. I, how ever am more of an 80's fan with groups like Culture Club, Huey Luis & The News, Michael Jackson, The Eagles, Foreigner, REO Speed Wagon and others. I don'tleave out the 90's when I'm in the mood, like Britney Spears, Back Street Boys, N'Sync and some rap stars like LL Cool J (I know he was earlier than that but liked him alot around this time), Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre.

I am not too fond of anything from the 21st century but I can find on song here and there I can get hooked on once in a while. My taste of music is a variety that scares even me. Anything from Rock, slow dance (my fav), rap, reggae, pop, classic, oldies, salsa, merengue, bachata, free style, club music, dance, trance, house music, jazz, spanish pop, spanish rock and even metal.

I even listened to Menudo once if anyone has heard or remember them. I have a nice list of songs (only 6000+) from all these genres if anyone is interested in looking at them. Nice article.

Oh, BTW, I have yet to find anyone who has made me feel like an belong in a museum but it's only a matter of time with todays teens considering songs that are about 3 weeks to a month old already out of style.

I really, really dislike rap. It's so boring and unmelodic. I just don't get it.

It also seems to promote a black stereotype that is not really positive.

Here's another thought that makes you think "Gee, I'm getting old."

I was stopped at an interstate rest stop this morning on the way into the office. I saw this trucker climbing out of the cab of her truck with a set of legs that just didn't want to quit. My first thought? "Who wears Daisy Duke's in January??" quickly followed by "Well, it has been rather warm for a VA winter." (It's currently 61 degrees outside and really sunny). My THIRD thought "Man, she's got a nice ass." Must be getting old ...
