Star Wars Galaxies, the prime rival to World of Warcraft and mind-child of LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment, is celebrating its fifth year of gameplay. The popular MMO, based on (you guessed it) the Star Wars's universe, has reached a major milestone. Along with its popular sister games, EverQuest, EverQuest II, and The Matrix Online, SWG on its own has over 100,000 subscribers (estimate, don't sue me). The In-Game community is celebrating Empire Day (the IG name for the anniversary) with gifts, awards, and player-run events. SWG is innovative, in that it allows for players to have their own house, create their own pets, and fight in space. It also allows for truly iconic PvP, with Stormtroopers and Rebel Troopers engaging in firefights all over the massive galaxy, which includes planets like Corellia, Tatooine, Endor, Kashyyyk, and Mustafar, in addition to others. Get in on the party, which lasts until July 22nd! Pick up a subscription and forge your own tale into Star Wars lore!

Lame, lame, lame.

I love Star Wars and was so excited about the MMORPG when it came out. And the story to it made sense. Set between Episodes 4 and 5. So you know what that means?

NO FRICKEN JEDI!!!!

So they made it difficult to achieve such a status and I thought it was a good idea since there were a few surviving Jedi in hiding.

But then the bitching and whining commenced so you made it easier. It was about this time that I decided to attempt to reach the status of Jedi. And just when I am about finish the next revamp comes along (due to more whining on how hard it is).

Year 2005: START THE GAME AS A JEDI!

So now in a galaxy where the Jedi are suppose to be nearly extinct I land my vessel on Tattoine and in a Imperial controlled town I see about 50 Jedi running about playing with there brand new lightsabers.

LAME.

Oh each revamp made combat ever more LAME.

Star Wars Galaxies needs a Death Star pointed at it.

Wow, I expected some negativity, but not this much. Try kicking into it again, GU4 and Chaps 8 and 9 have amped it up.

People still play that game?!?

I quit long ago and really haven't looked back. After the combat revamp the game pretty much died. I tried to play it a little after that, took advantage of some free playing time offers and found the game so far removed from anything I wanted to play I quickly killed the subscription again.

I miss playing with my friends, but they were friends from playing Diablo II, and later we played a fair amount of World of Warcraft together, but since have pretty much gone our own ways, with my time spent playing Xbox 360 content.

If someone is still playing Galaxies, more power to them, but there's no way I'd offer SOE or Lucas more of my money for the pile of crap it had become.

Everquest 2 is (or was) the "prime rival to World of Warcraft". SWG launched more than a year earlier and is SciFi, not Fantasy like EQ2 and WoW. SWG never rivalled WoW.

As for 100,000 subscribers? I seriously doubt it's anything like that many anymore. Unless you're going to include people on the Trial accounts or oldtimers who've got free time to try and lure them back, I expect the number is more around the 50-75,000 mark at most. Enough to keep it from folding but not enough to hire any really significant amounts of developers to actually finish the new version of the game.

I've tried the game again recently and the gameplay is simply terrible, even if you ignore what it used to be. The game engine just wasn't designed to do what it's being asked to do now and it is painfully obvious that it's just not coping.

I wanted to like it again but it's just not a good game anymore.

P.S. "Endor" is actually a moon, not a planet!

I started playing just before the NGE (big combat revamp, dunno if you guys remember the CU). Frankly, its hard to form an opinion, because my time swings between hard-core playing and just chilling with friends at the guild hall. They are introducing some updates to the game engine in the coming months, and the recent merger (can't remember with who) brought in some new dev blood. I know some vets who are coming back with a sour taste in their mouth are actually enjoying the new instances.

Endor is a moon, I forgot.

I was in the beta, and was a long time player. But when the NGE hit, it just took all the fun out of the game. Sad, but hey, old SWG was the most fun I'd had in an MMO, so I prefer to remember the good times, not the stripped down paint-by-numbers MMO it became later.

I started about half a year after it came out, and when I started I wasn't very good at MMO's... it was my first. So it was hard, but I came back a month later and loved it. I got into a really good and friendly clan, and it was just a great experience. Then the CU came, and it just sucked. The NGE made the combat better again, but the whole class system just sucked balls. I want the skill trees back! Rawrrawrrawr!

SWG sure isn't the prime competitor for WoW. AoC has sold like 700,000 copies, hasn't it?

I played SWG before the NGE. The wife and I enjoyed it, especially the whole housing thing and player cities. The dogfighting was kind of fun. The cantina was awesome, usually, especially when most of the entertainer-types were not AFK.

I was a smuggler, and although I never could smuggle, I liked the game. Then came the NGE. Lost all interest after that, and I'm not coming back. How can I trust they wouldn't have another huge, sweeping change that would totally wipe out my wife's entire class and make the game less fun for us?

I await the Bioware mystery MMO. SWG deserves whatever (further) massive failures it has planned for itself in the future.
