Yay! Supreme Court upholds photo ID law for voters in Indiana

6-3 decision for common sense

I love this news (from Associated Press, by Mark Sherman, Associated Press Writer):

Supreme Court upholds photo ID law for voters in Indiana

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court ruled Monday that states can require voters to produce photo identification without violating their constitutional rights, validating Republican-inspired voter ID laws.

In a splintered 6-3 ruling, the court upheld Indiana's strict photo ID requirement, which Democrats and civil rights groups said would deter poor, older and minority voters from casting ballots. Its backers said it was needed to prevent fraud.

For details on who voted what ways for this one:[more]

The law "is amply justified by the valid interest in protecting 'the integrity and reliability of the electoral process,'" Justice John Paul Stevens said in an opinion that was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Anthony Kennedy. Stevens was a dissenter in Bush v. Gore in 2000.

Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas also agreed with the outcome, but wrote separately.

Justices Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and David Souter dissented, just as they did in 2000 (in Bush v. Gore).

End of quote

The opinions for this one actually should make for very interesting reading for those that care to spend the time on the topic.  Regardless, I'm glad to see the decision that came here and obviously (from my headline/title) am happy about same.

Good news.  Now all we need is a federal law requiring ID's to vote.

NOw let them tell us that the MSM is not Biased! First, 6-3 is not splintered, but a solid majority (2/3rds is good enough to over ride a presidential veto!). Second, the ruling has NOTHING to do with 2k and Gore V Bush! What a bunch of morons the AP is!

Also, for Lucas, I guess I just lied again! I read Yahoo!

I wonder how any adult can carry on normally day to day without a picture ID in this day and age? This should not even be an issue. All these morons should have their paychecks sent to a bank that doe not require ID to make a withdrawl, then we'll see how fast they change their tune.

Except the logic of the argument for the law is flawed, there were NO incidents of voter fraud prosecuted related to incidents at the polls in Indiana. There WERE incidents of voter fraud prosecuted involving absentee ballots which do not require ID's.

Kind of like how Republicans lie about the border fence being anti terrorism while ignoring the fact that the only recorded incident of a terrorist crossing our borders illegally occurred on the Canadian border.

I bet the victims of gang violence by illegal aliens in SoCal would beg to differ on your definition of what a terrorist is or how many cross the border. Radical Islamists don’t have a lock on terrorism.

Prove you are who you say you are or stay home, it's not that difficult.

I've had a picture ID since I was 17, it was no problem. I'm sure your just worried about the poor illegals not being able to vote, because anyone that must do a minimal amount of things like buying a car, home, openning a bank account, driving already has it. You;d pretty much, with few exceptions, have to be a lazy bastard not to go pick up a free ID card. When you trade your tricycle in for a car, you'll see what I mean. Til then, have your mom explain it to you.

In several locations throughout the country there are limited if NO locations where picture ID's can be obtained easily. Set aside the cost which by definition makes it a poll tax and therefore unconstitutional, you still must deal with the fact that a lot of poor and disabled will lack the means or ability to obtain the ID.

When you move out of your mother's house and she doesn't have to spent her saturdays presoaking your underoos to eliminate your racing stripes you will think otherwise.

Prove it. Since the law provides for free ID for those who need it. Show us where. Where someone cannot get a drivers license, or ID, and must have one to vote.

Dead men may tell no tales, but they vote often in Chicago. Always for liberals - the party of the dead.

Excuses....excuses.  Having ID is not a "poll tax".  The only reason people like you don't like this law is it might just stop democrats from voting 3-4 times.

Yes, this is great news for America... next step is getting the Democrat leaders that owe their positions to voter fraud to care about the law.

I keep challenging Democrats to name one government program for the poor or elderly that doesn't require proof of eligibility.  So far, no one has been able to come up with one.

You could always do a carrer in the military like I did, they give you an ID card, but in your case swimming aross the Rio Grande doesn't qualify you as a Navy veteran, just someone who can't get a free ID from the DMV. Illegals are (and rightly so) the only people that should have a problem getting an ID.

Not for them. For $50, they can get any ID they want, and seem to always do.

I agree with you Dr Guy...that's why I put the "should" in there. It's a sad situation. They encrypt a thumb print now into drivers license, maybe they should make sure the person matches the card witha scanner at the polling places. And ICE waiting in the wings.

yeah that pesky constitution again. Face facts, despite the efforts of the fascists running the Bush junta the constitution still matters to some Americans
