I don't like Kerry at all, but I'm still voting for him

After having seen Kerry in action, I am throughly convinced that he is a major asshole. I am also convinced, however, that Bush is a danger to this country and everything it stands for. I would rather have a jerk as the president than suffer political chaos and the persecution of minorities.

Honestly, I won't be drinking a beer with senator Kerry anytime soon, so I am not so worried about the 'likeablility' aspect of things.

The main elements of why someone votes the way they do should be (IMO) 1) which candidate best represents their interests best and 2) which candidate will do the best for the largest number of people. I think you weight those 2 in some way and come up with a choice. There is always conflict because no candidate possesses what everyone wants.

Hypothetically then, let's consider a case in this election. Let's say that you were 65 and just retired. The Democrats have a much better concept of what concerns you, healthcare, prescription drugs, taxes (assuming you make less than $100,000) and retirement benefits. So the big issue would be the second part and whether the largest number of people are best served by the Democrats. Bush would seem to have a stronger idea of U.S. security in the sense of foreign threats but Kerry is not without merit because you can't establish a record until you have been in office and he has served in war situations plus he seems to understand the role intelligence plays having served in the Senate on the Intelligence Committee. So you might vote for Kerry on that basis.

You might also see it differently, that's why it's majority rule, not simply my analysis or anyone else's.

I have personally voted in 8 elections and of those 8 the person I voted for was elected 4 times. You know what, the country survived all those presidents and will survive the next one too.
