Career politicians use the word, "BILLIONS" In a casual manner. A billion is a difficult number to wrap my brain around and I assume a difficult number for you to wrap your brain around too!.

However let me put a BILLION INTO A LITTLE PERSPECTIVE FOR YOU ALL.

A BILLION seconds ago it was 1959.

A BILLION minutes ago Jesus Christ was still alive!

A BILLION hours ago our ancestors were still living in the stone age!

A BILLION years ago Evolutionist tell us no form of humanity walked the planet.

A BILLION DOLLARS ago the federal government spent that amount in Eight hours and twenty minutes, at the present rate of spending.

While these thoughts are still fresh in our minds, lets take a look at hurricane Katrina, just in New Orleans, which is considered our governments greatest failure. Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu asked the Congress for 250 BILLION dollars to rebuild New Orleans. If you were one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans it would mean that you would receive 516,258 each! over 1/2 million dollars. or, if you had one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans, each household would get1,329,787 Dollars, or if you were a family of four you would receive 2,066,012 dollars.

But what went wrong? Did the residents get the monies? Who spent the BILLIONS? The Answer is the career politicians and their cronies did, you know the tax and spend crowd.

The following list of taxable items did not exist 100 years ago.

Cigarette tax. Corporate Tax, Dog License Tax. Federal Unemployment Tax. Fishing License Tax. Food license tax. Fuel permit tax. Gasoline Tax. Hunting license tax. Inheritance tax. Inventory tax. IRS Interest and penalties tax {taxes on top of taxes}. Liquor tax. Luxury tax. Marriage License Tax. Medicare tax. Property Tax. Real estate tax. Recreational Vehicle tax. Road usage tax {truckers}.  Sales tax. Services charge tax. Social security tax. State income tax. State unemployment tax. Telephone taxes {federal excise tax, universal tax, federal, state and local Surcharge tax, Minimum usage tax, recurring and non-recurring tax}. Utility tax. Vehicle sales tax. Watercraft registration tax. and last but not least well permit tax!

Now we have two candidates from the Democrats that promise to raise our taxes some more.

Much as I hate to say this, Vote McCain 2008!

The US debt is going to cause the demise of our country. The war in Iraq has already cost us over 500 BILLION DOLLARS, much of which is borrowed money. We're paying over 200 BILLION DOLLARS a year just on the interest on the US debt. People who don't care about the debt don't care about the country and should leave.

Now, the two democratic candidates have said that they're going to raise taxes on the wealthy, but I doubt very seriously that will affect anyone posting on JU (including me).

The Clintons made over 100 million dollars since 2000. How many jobs did they create because of Bush's tax cuts and how many jobs do you think will be lost if their taxes are raised? The answer is 0. Corporations making record profits are not going to lay anyone off if their taxes are raised.

Where do you get your figures from? some democratic website? the top 10% pay over 90% of taxes. But Democrats want more, because they are after all the party of Tax and spend.

I do believe that there is a class system developing.... I'm not going to go so far as to describe the various levels of middle and upper class because quite frankly I don't know how to define those properly. But, there is definitely a growing permanent underclass. Many jobs that were once mill jobs or manufacturing jobs have been replaced with pizza delivery or wal-mart jobs. Yes, a few smart folks who work these  jobs will always find a way here or there to move on up the ladder, but the truth is that the number of spots higher up the ladder are getting fewer and fewer. Yes, you will always have the entrepreneur who finds a niche and makes a go at it, but the truth is that the vast majority of entrepreneurs fail in the first two years.

This is replicating itself more and more across a broad field, and is the result of changes in technology to a great deal, but also monopolized on from a political perspective as well- Please bear with me as I try to explain-

In your traditional old telephone company, you used to have a lot of central office techs who were pretty smart and involved with their craft. These were guys who would go out in the field and install equipment, troubleshoot network problems, provision equipment etc. Basically they were the go-to guys, and were considered "middle class". Typically unionized, made a good wage and part of a four year trades program. These were guys who could tear apart an old radio system, find a faulty crystal on a printed circuit board and do the repairs right then and there. Now, these jobs still exist and are still important, but ho boy are they shrinking big time! Now most communications products are designed to have the intelligence "built-in" during the engineering phase. By the time it hits the field, you just need a pair of hands to cable it out and plug it in.

This has effectively cut this job requirement out of the loop. The truth is (and most people don't wanna admit it) The central office technician will one day be completely obsolete. Communications organizations will need two types of people- a bunch of brains at the top, these are the folks who will remotely log in to equipment to provision and troubleshoot it. Network guys and programmers, folks who have industry certifications that you don't just pick up overnight. Most often these folks will work from home or a central NOCC environment, and they are smart cookies indeed. In today's climate these are called "gurus". While there will always be a demand for these kinds of folks, you don't need a bazillion of them to provision and look after your network. On the other end, you will need folks in the field to run cables, pan dishes and swap cards out. Occasionally some of these folks will study real hard and defy the odds to turn into a net-guru at the top but the nature of the job will be mostly physical.

What this means is that you will need a handful of really smart guys at the top making primo dinero. If you are one of these skilled dudes, life will be sweet. Then, you will need a whole ton of low-paid guys to pull cable and drive around in a company van. While the pay for these lower jobs can be good right now, as the work becomes increasingly physical and unskilled in nature so too will the pay stagnate or drop.

This overall trend is replicating itself across a broad field. There will of course be some skilled trades which will endure and always be lucrative (plumbers and welders, etc) but for the most part we're going to a world of a handful of gurus running the show, and then a whole bunch of low-paid unskilled folks acting as hands and feet. If you are in the "hands and feet" category, you essentially become a disposable human being, because you are easily replaced and have little impact on the operations of the company on a strategic level if you leave. On the other hand if your main network architect leaves the company you may have a problem.

The fact that we are moving to a class system is not a question in my mind. For me the main question is what should we do about it?

So what. Wealthy people use their wealth to generate more wealth. We're talking about the top 10% pulling their weight. Warren Buffet's secretary pays a greater percentage of her income in taxes than he does. That's a screwed up system.

So what? Buffet employs people and pays them too, what exactly does his secretary do besides type and answer phones? does she create work for others?
