Stardoc gives fans a magical early Thanksgiving gift

How to masterfully bury explosive news and keep it quiet?

Issue no. 175 of Game Informer (November 2007) has an interesting little blurb on page 56 as part of the "The good, the bad, and the ugly" section of the issue.

"Stardock CEO and president, Brad Wardell, as assured fans that the company is going forward with a sequel to... Master of Magic. Wardell expects the game to hit shelves in 2009, and he says that Stardock plans to accept player-created mods which will be vetted and then downloadable to other players."

Wow. Wow. Wow. I *still* play MoM to this day on a VPC I set up specifically for that. Given how generally awesome Stardock is when it comes to developing and supporting games, this could not be better news!

I did a forum search prior to posting this, and I didn't see any recent posts about this game/topic, but if it's already been posted somewhere - my apologies!

Yes it was posted on in the Master Of Magic Thread and it is a misquote. A dev has already said they are working on a fantasy TBS, but it won't carry the MoM license.

There was one just the other day. Game Informer was wrong; the fantasy game we're working on has some similarities to MoM, but it is not a MoM sequel (we never got the rights from Atari).

Yep, but I think Atari (along with most other game companies) wants to delay being taken over by Stardock.

Damn...maybe I searched wrong for it then, because the last post I saw regarding this was in April, and I figured that something might have changed.

How depressing!!!

You know how in grocery stores they have the generic breakfast cereal that is exactly like the brand-name, just a different name? Froot Loops begets Fruit-O's, Lucky Charms begets Marshmallow luckies. Is SD pursuing a similar strategy with their fantasy game?

Only SD doesn't make generic brand games...

I can't wait for StarDock's not-MoM.

MoM is still in my top 5 games and I am following 3 different fan re-makes ATM.

Brad - Any chance we can get an update as to what is going on with the 4X fantasy game team? The last info I know of about the progress is -

"Most of our game development team is working on a new fantasy strategy game with a 2009 release date; public beta next year. It’s a turn-based game with tactical combat which is also turn-based. One could describe it as part Master of Magic, part Populous and part X-Com. We’ve developed a pretty extraordinary graphics engine for it. I wish I could take credit for it but the stuff’s way beyond my meager capabilities; the engine team we’ve put together over the last couple of years is just amazing"

The thing I would most like to know is how you 'vision' for this game is different then MoM?

now that atari is no longer making games, maybe they will sell MOM to someone else and we'll get both stardocks game & MOM2!!

i can always hope!
