I don't think that this was posted before, so forgive me if it has, but I've discovered a free MMO that I've found to be pretty enjoyable and should appeal to many of you here since we are all GalCiv2 fans (obviously).

The MMO game is called Starport: Galactic Empires. I don't want to go into a long explanation of the game, so I'll try to describe it in terms of another game that just about everyone should be familiar with. Think of Sid Meier's Pirates! only set in space and also massively multiplayer. If you like Pirates!, which I've only met a few people that didn't like this game, then you'll like Starport. One really cool feature, that isn't available in Pirates!, is the ability to setup and "govern" your own colonies. All in all, a very fun game, but just as a warning, you certainly won't be overly impressed by the graphics and sound. Neither of which is as good as GalCiv2. But, as all 4x strategy gamers should know, graphics and sound are not necessary to have a really great game.

I'm posting this here because I'm trying to raise awareness of this game due to the fact that the community, while growing, is still pretty small compared to most MMO's. MMO's are obviously more fun the more people who play them, so I hope I can get some of you interested. (The community is a good one, by the way.)

Oh, I forgot to mention that you can also form "Corporations" that allow you to team up with other players to help establish your empire. Kind of like clans in WoW.

Oh God.. I knew it was a matter of time before someone mentions this game. I played Starport for some time and let me tell you, it's not as good as it sounds. Ok, the gameplay and style is addicting, its like Starflight (If anyone remembers that one.) but instead of mining and stuff, you basically trade, build and fight in real time. You can be good, evil or neutral and you use crazy weapons and stationary gun turrets. Even Nukes! Sound cool right? Now imagine all the MMORPG you've played, Especially Diablo II and WoW. Throw in ALL the idiots from those games who like to find shortcuts, cheap stuff and constantly selling stuff. Add the aggressive bastards and a$$holes and you got Starport. Imagine a kid who loves ruining your day launching 6 nukes at you and then warping out of the system before you can retaliate, then returning a minute later with 6 more nukes! Yeah, its slow to get started and fast to lose everything. The game is very addicting but it's annoyingly hard because of the idiots who just can't play fair. The creators of the game do update it like... everyday. I hope one day they fix the cheating problem. But yeah, its a good game if you know how to deal with jerks. Oh and if you decide to play the game, make sure you are ready for a LONG update. Like I said, they update the game almost everyday. And the updates don't come in a bulk, the game client downloads it one at a time. And a game tipe, I highly advise you to learn what "Sliding" means and learn to do it well... thats enough of a rant for me.

I liked the look of this and although I read the in game help I asked a simple question regarding where can I see a journal of my current objectives and knowone answered me. I figured people must be busy so I waited a while before asking again as no one likes a spammer , I basically rinsed and repeat asking 2/3 time a day for the last to days and no one spoke to me or anything

Let me save you some time. DON'T BOTHER! I played SGE for 2 years. That was up till the point when the dev's added so many colony busting updates that it was impossible to do anything but clean your colonies pollution. That's right, pollution. It was added to get rid of "builders" who would build a colony, then leave the game for 29 days, show up once, then leave for another 29 days. Why 29 days? Because your account is deleted off the server you don't log in at least once every 30 days.

All well and good to get rid of these once a month clowns. But what about the guy (myself included) who has over 100 colonies? That's right. You spend every gaming moment moving from colony to colony cleaning up the pollution (at a rate of $1 million credits per 10% reduction).

The point about daily updates. Well said!

Redwing, it really depends on which server you are on and who is on at the aame time. When I played, I always took the time to explain things to newbies. Even advanced some $$$ if the person wasn't a beggar (and there were a lot of those "Hey, can someone give me $10 million credits?"). Also, if PK or non-PK server. A lot of players would fake friendly, then shoot you down for the cheap kill.

All in all, I wouldn't waste my time going back. And you shouldn't waste your time downloading it.

if i wanted to do massive multiplayer online gaming, i'd go back to world of warcrack. I think i'll stick to massivly single player gaming for the time being. Launch fighters! Seige frigates approach!

Okay, well, it's been a year since I posted on this. What I have to say now totally agrees with ArkCeleste.

To give you an idea: I was ranked #8 Overall on my server, which, at the time, was the first or second most active. My Corp was ranked in the top 10 (I think we were 6th at one point). All that being said so you can see how much time and effort I put in and how addicted I became to it. However, the idiots on the game, as mentioned by ArkCeleste, made it totally miserable to play. The top 3 corps basically destroyed everything and everyone in sight, including players who were total newbs and never would have posed a threat. We're talking about players who had just DL the game and didn't even know the controls! This was after repeated attempts by multiple active corps, including an alliance of multiple higher ranking corps, to fight back, persuade, and even beg the top 3 to call it off as they were ruining it for all. (This even included many veteran players, who had been playing for over two years, messaging the Devs about how it had gotten out of hand.)Needless to say that server totally died within a week. The game devs start new servers at regular intervals, but it does no good. The same idiots move from one sever to the next and kill them too. We're talking literally 15-20 players that have the power to ruin what could be a great game for everyone else and it's as if the Devs, who DESIGN the game, can't do anything about it.

Let me state for the record I am not whining. I left the game on good terms, with my main reason for leaving being that it had actually gotten to the point were it felt more like work than a game (ie. NOT FUN and Games are supposed to be FUN.)

Long story short, and after a year of reflection, Don't Waste Your Time. Listen to ArkCeleste. He/She speaks the truth.
